How much work do you have to put into BC Calc?

Hi everyone! So rn I’m a sophomore and I am taking BC Calc next year. I was wondering if you have any study tips for BC Calc or info on how to prep for it over the summer? Also, how was your note taking system? Did you take a ton of notes? If so, please let me know what sort of “school supplies” or stationery I should invest in to be successful in this class!

How solid is your pre-calc understanding?

Have you taken calc AB before?

If you’ve taken Calc AB before, then you will find much of the first part of the BC course review. D21 took AB first in 10th and BC this past year, in 11th. For her, taking AB first was helpful, as she feels it would have been too much for her to jump right into BC, even though she did well in precalculus. Starting her BC year with a lot of review of AB helped her general understanding of calculus in general.

I know you didn’t ask about taking AB first, but whether you did or not will influence the answers people give you.

In our high school, it is a lot of work. A couple of hours of homework a night. Study groups and tutors are common. It’s definitely an above grade level class.

If you have a strong understanding of precalculus, you should be able to do well. Since you are two grade levels ahead in math, you are probably very good in math and should not be too concerned about it.

Be aware that calculus BC will cover material at a college pace, which is faster than typical high school math pace or calculus AB pace.
