My school website says students must be at least half time to get financial aid. I’m a provisional graduate student taking some undergraduate classes that don’t count for this purpose. I have lots of financial need.
Is it likely a sliding scale? How fast, and what limits?
Is it just by total, or by line item? Can I forgo loans but take the full time work study amount?
I emailed my school, but they are taking time to get back to me, and I’m stressing a bit until then.
My department says I should knock out their undergrad classes as soon as possible to prepare myself for the graduate ones. I’m afraid I don’t qualify for undergraduate or graduate aid right now. I might have to use my credit card.
Thank you.
I doubt that you’d be awarded any work study. You already have a bachelors, and you’re not enrolled as a grad student. (and not many grad students ever get work study anyway).
Do not put your school costs on your CC. That would be crazy. A student loan would be bad enough. A CC would be far worse.
Can’t you get a job and pay as you go?
Really, don’t worry about it being a work study job. Get a different job on campus or off. There are a few tax benefits for a work study job, but not enough to worry about. Get a job. Get any job. You might be able to get a pretty high paying one if you look around. My daughter has one for just a few hours a week but it pays $15/hr, so she basically makes twice as much as she would in a work study job. You could also try tutoring to make some extra money.
I’m applying for work too. I currently tutor MATH, but that is through work study.
Does a high number of undergraduate credits ever count against graduate financial aid credit maximums?
Graduate financial aid is not the same as undergrad financial aid. Graduate financial aid is generally merit based, not need based. It is based on the strength of your application and the school’s desire to have you as part of their cohort.
In the vast majority of cases, part time students do not receive merit aid for grad school. The only aid they receive is loans.
Schools and majors sure do vary.
Grad financial aid is usually federal loans and that doesn’t have anything to do with undergrad credits you have. Sometimes grad schools give tuition waivers for desirable students, often PHD students have a tuition waiver as part of the aid package because they are required to TA or RA. If you are not able to use graduate funding for your prerequisite classes then I don’t think there is any work/study for post grads. But there are often university jobs that will pay you even if you don’t have work/study. Look at the student jobs listing, or which are open to anyone.t should note which are work/study
Do NOT put your college costs on a credit card!!! You will regret that as you try to pay your living expenses while also making CC payments.
Christmas is coming so many places are hiring. If you’re “good enough,” some companies will keep you after tthe holidays are over. Places like Target hire a LOT of people at this time. Work as much as you can!!
I don’t know where you’re looking for a job, but really jobs are rather plentiful right now.
