My efc is 15,000 according to the FAFSA I completed. Does that mean I will be expected to pay that much at duke or do I have to pay more?
You will most likely pay more. Duke requires the CSS/Profile and will base some of the need based awards on the information on the CSS.
If your EFC after using the school specific calculator is 15k then the expected contribution will approx 15k. You can reduce this by student contributions from summer employment.
The aid package may include work study. There are many components potentially
But as mentioned you need to use each schools full NPC or net price calculator and be very exact. The numbers may be very different. It will give you a very good idea at each school.
In the past, we used to say that, on average, you can expect about a third more in cost than the Fafsa info. So, did OP run the NPC? Fafsa is for fed aid purposes, that’s just one segment of how aid is calculated.
If you’re dependent on heavy aid, you should look into some sites about how it works. what the lingo is.
That is likely the LEAST you will be expected to pay for college, unless you: 1) Pick a school with a lower Cost of Attendance, or 2) Get enough merit money to bring the COA below that.
Duke uses CSS PROFILE information to come up with their financial packages. They will likely include a student contribution in their calculations. If you your parents are divorced or there is a family business or primary home equity in the picture, the numbers could be quite different.
We went to 3 different informative sessions that they offered. (They were all the same, but each was run by different people) The one thing I got from all 3 was that if your family makes less then $65K a year your parents out of pocket should be nothing.
On Amazon, you can get a book called The Ultimate Scholarship book 2020, it has so many opportunities to apply for money, most are small 500-1000 but that can add up fast.
Depends upon family assets and other factors. . Like definition of family. I know several low income , high asset families, folks who own a business, divorced families, and Duke hit them up.
You can have a zero FAFSA EFC and not qualify for institutional aid if the school uses CSS Profile and the numbers on that come out differently.
