Well, my scientific mentor is a Harvard professor, and he actually came to me after seeing my work (I didn't go out and look for him). If he wrote a good recommendation for me would it make a significant difference in my chances at Harvard?

come on man.. of course it'll help you!

If he came to you, that IS impressive.

How much have you seen of him since? Did you work with him after that?

What I'm saying is...does he know you well enough to write a good letter? Other than "He had this one project I thought was really cool. Admit him".

If you've worked with him, and he likes you, I'm sure it would make a big difference in your chances (unless you have 1000/2400 SATs, which I doubt :D )

Well yeah, for the past two years he's been my scientific mentor. We've been in contact over email and we've met and done two full research projects together. In addition, I helped him with a few of his research projects. So, I know him pretty well and he knows me. That'll help a lot, right?

Yes - that's a really good thing.

If would be especially impactful if he was able to compare you favorably with Harvard undergraduates whom he has taught and mentored.
