I am in class of 21 (current junior) and Claremont Pomona seems like an extremely attractive option for me, if I get in of course!
One thing I’m slightly worried about though, is that everyone will be very “nerdy” and more introverted. I know it’s a stereotype, but I still wish to meet a diverse group of personalities.
Maybe people are nerdy, which seems like a given seeing as the academics are so rigorous, but do most leave it in the classroom?
Thanks!!
that’s kind of an insulting question…
I have never been to those schools but I never thought of them as nerdy.
Maybe you should focus on bigger schools rather than LAC’s.
Sorry, i don’t mean it that way. I just want to get a better idea of what the student body is like. From what I have read, people make it seem like only very nerdy people go to it (for lack of a better word), and I want to know if it’s simply a stereotype or not.
I recently committed to Harvey Mudd–supposedly the nerdiest school on campus–and was pleasantly surprised to find that the kids are pretty chill. I wouldn’t worry about it when applying to a school like Pomona because all top schools are nerdy to an extent. From what I’ve gathered it seems like Pomona students are pretty normal (at least the ones who’ve gotten in from my school are).
alright, thanks! and would you say the personalities are very diverse? as in, pretty equal introvert/extrovert or whatever? thank you
and congrats on Harvey Mudd!
Current Pomona student procrastinating finals here! The 5C social scene is very “normal” and thriving – you’ll find people with all sorts of preferences on every campus. In fact, this is probably the norm on most campuses that draw from a wide demographic (barring Caltech and other outliers). What is distinct about Pomona is that pretty much everyone I’ve met will happily geek out about their passions for a few hours if you encourage it. Being at an academically rigorous institution doesn’t change the fact that we’re adolescents in college. If day drinking is your thing, join beer league or hop over to CMC on weekends. Otherwise, there’s a 5C rager held every Saturday night that’s pretty widely attended, along with parties and other socials on Thursdays and Fridays. They can sometimes be hit-or-miss, but some parties are consistently fantastic. Point is, in my experience introversion isn’t something to worry about when you’re looking at school culture. In retrospect, I would pay the most attention to regional demographics (percentage from east coast/west coast/midwest/international) and the trends that follow, the college’s penchant for elitism and careerism (hint: east coast private schools are the worst), the climate and location, and the people you meet if/when you visit, especially as a prospective accepted student, or “prospie” in Pomona slang.
