How NU students review Northwestern <2>

<p>Music - Performance
Anyone who even considers NU is an complete idiot. I transfered here from Oberlin because my major teachers came here, and it is the worst experience I have had in my enitire life, and the biggest mistake I have ever made. The administration doesn't give a **** about the students here. Complaints are not regarded and nothing is ever changed. Lighting along the lakeshore is awful at night, and several girls in the past year have been attacked and ALMOST rapped. The whole school is set up to make as much money as possible with no regard to the student. As a transfer student, I never recieved an adequate tour of the campus, nor insightful information, like were is health services ect. The professors only care about getting tenure and keeping it, they have absolutely no time for you outside of class for questions. This school also projects one type of mentality, and if you are upper-middle class to rich and white, then you will not function well here. To prove my point, read this: </p>

<p>As you may be aware, Northwestern’s Evanston campus has been the site of two very troubling incidents during the past two days. On February 11, racial and sexual slurs were written on the doors of several rooms in Ayers College of Commerce and Industry. On February 12, a swastika was drawn on a door to a floor in McCulloch Residence Hall. </p>

<p>These actions have hurt members of the Northwestern University community who are understandably upset. I would like to assure them, and all other concerned members of the community, that actions such as these are not acceptable by any standards and will not be tolerated at Northwestern. I condemn these acts as strongly as I can. University Police and Student Affairs are investigating these incidents; anyone who has information about these incidents should contact University Police or William Banis, Vice President for Student Affairs. In addition, staff from the offices of University Residential Life, African-American Student Affairs and the Multicultural Center will be meeting with students in regard to these incidents to provide all necessary support. </p>

<p>Do you want to go to a school that has stuff like this going on, and this just happened in the past week.
I'm so glad I moved off campus, housing sucks, and the food if prutride and over priced. It cost about $900 bucks a month to live on campus, that is why I live in the city, because it's cheaper. I can't wait to get out of this institution. It's as if they have confined to 4 years of torture just to get a piece of paper, and is SO not worth it. The Dir. of Student affairs in the school of music is amazing though, so are two ladies in Fin-aid, but beyond that, steer clear of everyone else. The music facilities here are the worst I've ever seen in my life. The practice rooms are not sound proof, they are drafty, and you feel the cold lake air comming through the cracks around the windows. There's only like 60 practice rooms in the whole school too which is ridiculous.
The students are the most self centered, arrogant, conservative, snooby, materialist bastards I have ever incountered on earth. Oh my God, you do not want to go to this school, it will be hell for you.

<p>History/Histories (art history/etc.)
NU is a great place: Unique for its combination of undergraduate education, arts, athletics and location; just about unsurpassed for its level of academic strength and prestige; and purple. Gots to love the purple.

Ok, where do I start? If I had had the proper foresight I would have transferred the day I arrived. First, if you are not lucky enough to be placed in a semi-social dorm, you're screwed from the beginning. The antisocial atmosphere at Northwestern sucks you in and then sucks the life out of you. Then there is the sorry excuse for Greek life....a bunch of wannabe ivy leaguers pretending they belong to a Big Ten school. And then there's the dating scene, or lack thereof. You will find one of three guys as a student at Northwestern: 1) someone who is so antisocial he has probably never spoken to someone of the opposite sex, 2) someone who is not even attracted to the opposite sex, or 3) some tool of a guy who's majoring in econ, plans to become and investment banker and has nothing interesting to say besides "dude, i'm sooo wasted". But enough about the social scene. The university's primary function is as a place of academia. Well, Northwestern seems to be stuck somewhere in between a small liberal arts college and a huge state school. While it claims to have the reputation comparable to the former, the feeling of being a faceless name in the crowd corresponds more to the latter. With a positive degree of certainty, I can say that not ONE professor would ever recall that I attended his/her lecture for an hour a day for nine weeks. And it wasn't as if I am shy. The only two redeeming qualities I can find in the university at which I wasted for years of my precious youth are 1) the opportunity to see a bunch of brilliantly talented performers before they hit it big and 2) the proximity to one of the greates cities in the world.

Definitely the best time of my life. I made some great friends, my future wife, and established strong relationships with professors. It's big enough that there is something for everyone here, but you don't feel lost as you might at a state school. The people are intelligent, and all of them have an interesting/unique background. I wouldn't go anywhere else, if I had to choose again.

<p>Economics
Great school, the Baccaulerate/MD program is great and helps the transition to medical school.

<p>Economics
Northwestern was absolutely wonderful. The student body is amazing, and everyone had something more than just an SAT score or class rank to contribute. Academics are challenging, and the history/economics departments were very good (it is rather easy to double/triple major at NU). I would highly recommend the school to anyone. There are plenty of research opportunities, indeed, I got my first grant from NU for my own research abroad. Professors are willing to take you as a research assistant during summers, and all of them were ready to help you when you needed it. I had a great time, and I only wish it lasted longer.

<p>Political Science
I would recommend Northwestern based on its academic strength alone. I was exposed to a range of possible majors and career choices, and provided with top-quality instructors and facilities. The people and atmosphere were not my style, but they may be for some. A campus visit is in order for anyone who's considering attending.

<p>Engineering Department
Make sure you get in with a good group of friends. Working together makes the work a lot easier (and sometimes even fun), and there is still competition to keep you going.

<p>Engineering Department
I'm in the biomedical engineering department. I've found that most of the engineering professors are so smart they have brains oozing out of their ears, and sometimes that seems to be a problem because they can't relate to students who are having trouble learning conceptual material. I'm the type of person who likes to learn the theory first, then applications, but at NU the quarter system never lets you learn both before moving to the next course, so you either get theory or application, never both. The philosophy seems to be 'learn how to do these twenty types of problems, and you'll be set for the exam' instead of 'learn these five ideas and be able to apply them to many types of problems'. A visiting professor complained in one of my classes that NU tech students are always worried about 'will we need to memorize this for the test' or 'will you test all of the chapter' instead of questions on how to actually solve problems. If you just want to get an engineering degree that says 'Northwestern' and get $$$, this is the place for you. If you want to learn what engineering is all about, I suggest a different school. It's really a matter of balancing choices and necessities.

<p>Anyone can post on studentsreview.com, so I basically disregard their information. If you really want to know someone's opinion about the school, go talk to them in person.</p>

<p>uc_benz,</p>

<p>Not to mention we are seeing comments from only 30 people or so (some of them may have graduated already)? In any given year, NU has about 7000 undergrads. I think anyone smart enough to get in NU should also be mature enough to know what I am implying.</p>

<p>Please stop posting reviews that are almost decades ago. Northwestern has gone through so many changes internally and externally that their comments are moot.</p>
