how often do you eat in college? (and wat do u eat?)

I know for some people eating isn't a problem, and then again i know some people that survive on junk (chips, cookies, microwaveable mac and cheese) for days before having a real meal.

personally I eat whatever my money allows. I dont have a job, live off campus, and have no meal plan on campus so i get money from my parents so usually i eat TV dinners, and pizza the whole semester. sometimes McDonalds 1-3 times a month.

So? what do you do?

I’m one of those people who live on microwaveable meals for 5-6 days and then eat something at a restaurant or a pizza…if I’m really craving some good food, I go home Thursday evening (skip all of Friday’s classes) and eat a healthy weekend at home.

I don’t have a meal plan either. Btw, the Cliff bars and the other ‘meal replacement’ (NOT energy) bars work well for when you don’t care about taste and just need to stop your stomach rumbling (I use these a lot during exam times).

I lived off of granola bars, bagels with cream cheese, Honey Nut Cheerios with milk, Campbell soup-at-hands, melted cheese sandwiches, deli sandwiches I made with turkey cheese and mayo, chicken burritos from the local Qdoba near campus, orange juice, and milk when I ran out of meal swipes in November.

I went home like twice and my parents gave me those plastic Tupperware filled with leftovers. I placed in it my freezer for later.

And I had friends get me bananas, apples, and oranges from the dining hall for me just so I could feel like I was eating healthy.

I eat in the cafeteria about three times a week. It’s pasta, soup, bagels, cereal, and microwaveable stuff the rest of the time. It’s the only way to eat with my schedule.

Yeah this might be a noob question (I apologize in advance): do you guys force yourself to eat vegetables and healthy food at college? I know at home my parents ensure that meals always have a healthy portion of fruits and vegetables.

Eat healthy to avoid becoming a blobby blob

off topic: do you think it would be possible to actually cook in college? I love improv cooking and I would hate to give that up :(

I’ve always eaten decently, so I don’t have to force myself to add any veggies or fruits. My issue in college is just finding time to eat! I usually do two meals a day – a bagel and fruit for breakfast, then a salad (or possibly some junk food once in a while, like a veggie burger and fries) for dinner. I keep string cheese and chex mix in the room for snacks.

shimmsaw: of course its possible to cook your own food in college!!! its just uncommon.
I highly encourage everyone to cook their own food. Its just that things in life are prioritized, and cooking for yourself isnt near the top of that list.

I eat a lot of rice.

For me it is a priority; that was one of the things that was worrying me. I figured there would be no time for cooking, or else people wouldn’t eat ramen all the time XD thank you :)

i too agree with you shimmsaw!

theres nothing better in my mind than cooking some food and having a great big meal with friends and what not. good times! A forgotten treasure making and really enjoying food is.

I actually enjoy eating healthy so its not a problem for me. I eat 3 meals a day with 2 decent sized snacks. I eat the healthy stuff they serve in the dining halls.

I force myself to eat fruits and veggies. I never ate them at home, ever. They don’t even taste like food to me, I gag on them. But it is necessary!

“off topic: do you think it would be possible to actually cook in college? I love improv cooking and I would hate to give that up”

I do a fair amount of cooking with my microwave and I got a rival rice cooker-- you can boil water in it as well as steam vegetables, and make rice obviously. My boyfriends school has kitchenettes in the lounges but I don’t here, sadly.

I just eat whatever they serve at the dining halls in order to save money. I go to a culinary school pretty much so the food is usually good and the menus are decently well rotated. However I’m getting sick of it nowadays… except for the days they serve lamb.

Sick of a variety of culinary school foods? How is that possible?

Cause I’ve eaten the food they serve at least six times now. Sometimes the more “better” kinds of food are rarely served so it’s a bummer. The Montreal Chicken Sandwich is the bomb though, ciabatta bread, roasted peppers, mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken, and the choice of chipotle mayo, pesto mayo or both. soooo gooooodddd

My favorite meal is my overhauled version of red beans and rice. Very spicy, lots of veggies and red beans, and if I make a big pot I can have leftovers for days!

There’s also other simple stuff like pasta, tacos, soup and chicken sandwiches, peanut butter/honey on english muffins and such. I’m going to try to get more meat into my diet with sloppy joes. Mhmm salmon and rice would be nice right now! I’m big on grazing. I try to stick to simple/ quick/ easy meals and then pick up a bigger meal to make right after I go grocery shopping.

Snacks would be wheat thins/pickapeppa, saltines & cheese or peanut butter, canned mandarins/peaches/peas, berries, clementines when they are in season… salad too (but I like too much dressing on my salads- not a good thing!) Blueberry muffins make a nice treat during times with lots of exams.

I tend to have very particular tastes in food so the dining hall never really worked for me.
Right now I’m eating raspberries. Yum.

I had a meal plan and basically always ate on campus. If I had breakfast, it was usually a chocolate chip muffin, or a chocolate chip granola bar. For lunch and dinner I would rotate through a hamburger, pizza, chicken strips, chicken sandwich, or cheese quesadilla. I’m a pretty picky eater, so it was rare that I’d try whatever special they had for the day.

Freshman year an upperclassman in my suite found out I basically wasn’t eating any veggies, and got kinda upset about it, so I started getting carrots sticks sometimes. But then senior year they changed the pricing system for salad bar stuff, so it was ridiculous, and I didn’t bother.

I live with two other guys and none of us have cooked before. We all started cooking basic stuff that actually tastes pretty decent–burgers, fried rice, pasta, sandwiches, tuna salad, etc. It’s not hard and doesn’t really take much time. It’s probably not the healthiest stuff, but that’s not really a priority for me anyway. I don’t understand why more people with apartments don’t cook for themselves–most college students are nowhere as busy as they think. Way cheaper than eating out or at the dining commons, too.
