When thinking of fit for college, I thought it'd be nice to see what kind of students I would find at Duke. Obviously there will be the "it's a big diverse place where you can meet anyone" factor, but if you were to stereotype Duke..... is it preppy? is it hippie?

Also, how come I keep reading about cliquiness of Duke? Is this because of the greek scene? Any Duke kids out there not in the greek scene?

How would you rate the pretentiousness on campus?

Even though I don't expect to get in, I'd like to know more about the social caliber of Duke and whether I'd fit in or not.

Eh, it depends on how preppy is too preppy. As a general rule, people like to look nice, and most students care about their appearance. A rather large portion of the student body isn't that wealthy, though, and ~60% came from public schools. There's plenty of people here from the Midwest, South, and CA, and they balance out the preppiness. Personally, I come from a laidback public high school, wear jeans and a t-shirt/sweatshirt, and fit in just fine. It's a little preppier than Brown/Yale/Columbia/etc., but I'd say it's comparable it to Dartmouth, UNC, U Penn, Williams, Amherst, etc.

I haven't read that link before, but I find it kind of sad, personally. There is some truth in what it says, but it is blown waaaaay out of proportion.

Yeah I read that link. It wasn't so much what the writer said, but what the people commenting said that made me sad. The whole part about "why students at duke don't date" made me kind of disgusted with men as a group, and I know that that's not representative of everyone, but I'm also not niave and know that there are a lot of guys that think that way. Its upsetting. why do some guys have no respect for women? Why if a girl is attractive is she labeled as a slut with no self-respect and no interests or real intelligence? And if a girl in unattractive why is she ridiculed and devalued? And why is that all anyone cares about? You just can't win.
