My D got a U of R viewbook in the mail yesterday and was intrigued enough to ask why the school wasn't on her list. When I told her how much she hated the place during her brother's tour 2 years ago she had no memory of that reaction.

So, when I refreshed my memory about UR by reading the Fiske Guide I was convinced that Richmond would be a great fit for her. And then I got to the last paragraph where it says boys go preppy and girls wear sundresses to football games. Sundresses are the exact reason she won't consider her brother's school, Wake Forest.

I wouldn't go so far to say D is a tomboy. But, she's hardly the sundress-to-football-game type, either. When we toured Gettysburg, she loved seeing the girls wearing sweats to class. That's more her style.

So, how preppy is it? Can she wear sweats to class? Go without make-up? Or - GASP! - wear jeans to a football game? She's bound to read the Fiske description soon, and I'd like to know if it's accurate, or not.

Thanks. :)

Sundresses are definitely worn, but T-shirts are moreso now probably.
[Photo Gallery](galleries) Pic #17, you’ll see dresses, T-shirts, button downs, shorts, and guys in “green guy” (red and blue versions) costumes.

Sweats to class are common for the morning classes, I typically wore athletic shorts and t-shirts. Makeup is worn, but not by all (my wife stopped wearing makeup half-way through her freshman year thankfully).

UR is probably pretty similar to WFU, in terms of how the students dress. I’d definitely recommend a trip down to check it out for yourselves, first hand. I enjoy wearing khaki shorts and a polo, but hate pastels, checked shorts, etc. There were some that wore that stuff, but it was far from the norm. Our bookstore does sell Vineyard Vines branded apparel though.

I can tell you that I attended every football game this year and proudly sported my UR t-shirt and never even considered a sundress. My friends pretty much did the same and we’re all in different sororities, sports, etc. Sweats to class was not typical for me personally, but not uncommon to see particularly during exams. My experience has been that even though fashion/prep is clearly big on campus, you wear what you want to wear and no one cares.

While the sundresses and ties at football games are a quaint tradition, in my 4 years at UR, those who wore them to tailgate/games were always in the minority. And it was a pretty small minority. I love sundresses and am a total girly-girl, but sitting (or standing) in bleachers in my nice dress during a chilly fall day? No thank you! I always wore a school tee and jeans. And I fit in!

Yes, she can wear sweats wherever she wants. Plenty of people do it. Some girls get dressed up for class–makeup, heels, etc. Many don’t. You’ll definitely see a lot of preppy clothes on campus…but that’s not all you see, certainly.

It’s like nelly2010 says above: Wear what you want. As long as you’re not going to class naked, nobody will care.
