I know University of Maryland College Park has become much more competitive than it was 30 years ago. The average gpa for incoming freshman is very impressive and the location is great too. How prestigious do you consider it to be? Do you consider it in the upper echelon of public universities?
Prestige is all relative. A top public university? Absolutely. Some lists have it labeled as a public ivy, for whatever that’s worth. http://www.universityreview.org/list-of-public-ivy-schools/. Here is a list of more rankings http://www.umdrightnow.umd.edu/university-maryland-rankings
However, you shouldn’t pick a school based on perceived prestige. Choose a school that is a good “fit” for you. Find one that has a program of study you are interested in and then go visit. Check out the exact curricula and compare it to the exact curricula of other schools you are considering.
At the end of the day, it matters less where you choose to attend than what you do when you get there.
