I live in the midwest and not a lot is known about UMD(or maybe im just ignorant). What is its reputation in the east coast? Or better yet around the country. Thanks!

It's excellent on the east coast and in the world it's regularly in the top 100.

QS Top Universities: Top 100 universities in the THES - QS World University Rankings 2007

And here... http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2007/ARWU2007_Top100.htm

More importantly it's on a trajectory to be a top 10 university in the next decade. Very strong programs in nanotechnology, biomedical research, physics, computer science and mathematics. Was #1 in criminology (still might be). Has a very strong journalism school, business school and is known for great internships and recruiting.

QS is interesting. Not expecting to see Purdue and Pitt ranked higer and Vandy, Rice and Ga Tech lower than MD.

I live in Maryland and it used to be our state's safety school for most, but it's been shedding that image onto UMBC in recent years. It's still a safety for the top students (eg ivy caliber) but getting invited to the top programs like honors and gemstone is considered very prestigious.

I agree with Maximus001 that UMD's star is rising.

yes but do any of you know anything about the campus? i was in a program one summer staying on the campus for several weeks taking classes and stuff and if you didnt know, the dorms are known around here to suck. a lot of them dont even have ac. you can find out more at theU.com Online - College Campus Video Tours, Online Student Reviews and Info about Campus Life and at (no space between the two) students review . com. these have helped a lot in my college research! besides that, its kinda known for a lot of campus crime which is to be expected due to the area. bascially, its still considered a part of the dc suburbia which i know most instaters like me are using as their saftey. i've heard the same thing from everyone else academic wise. despite all this, i'm excited since i got accepted into their school of engineering which is becoming increasingly competitive.

if you live in midwest, UMD might not be very popular. It's still not very popular around the country. Midwest has many regional top public schools and they attract more students than UMD. However, on the east coast UMD is one of the best public schools (especially in engineering, science, business...). There are lots of people from NY, NJ and regions in East Coast attending UMD. The amount of students coming from midwest is still very small.

Newsweek listed UMD business (I think) as one of the best public schools in the nation.

I think 4K accepted out of 27K applicants should not be considered a safety. Safety is a school that anyone can get accepted to regardless of uw gpa and ec's

UMD has always had a great engineering program. People ? why so many students apply from NY/NJ area. The real reason is, education is very important and the h.s. are very competitive. Parents will buy a smaller more expensive house to get into a better school district. This is also true for many areas across the nation.

Orchdork7810...many ISS are very upset with 1300-1400 SAT's didn't even get accepted, let alone to engineering, honors, gemstone, etc.

As far as dorms...what's the big deal...you need to bring oscillating fan, and fun stuff to make your room the cool room. You will spend more time hanging out at games and other places on the campus than your room. Besides, you can always get in better dorms later on or move into an apartment

UMDCP is a fine school, and my comment is really about that QS TOP school list. since i'd never heard of it, i checked it out. it really seems off base on many counts and it makes me wonder who created it and how. it seems like they didn't have a good, working knowledge of our schools in this country. and it only marginally reflects any of our many ranking tools in the US. they are extremely generous with our very large schools, while totally ignoring many LACs and Tier I publics. Penn State is in, not UVA nor UNC Chapel Hill. no Georgetown, Amherst, nor Williams.but Purdue, and BU. just a comment. not very credable. but we have so many more rakings out there, so i guess it doesn't matter.

From today's Diamondbackonline.com:

The university has received more than 27,000 first-year applications, a 10 percent increase over the previous record, which was set the year after the men's basketball team won the national championship.

This time last year, applicants had an average GPA of 3.96 and an average SAT score of 1240-1380, said Shannon Gundy, associate director of undergraduate admissions. This year, the mean GPA has increased to 4.0 and the average SAT score is 1250-1390, she said.

The increase in applications comes just as the university plans to draw down enrollment by about 1,000 over the next five years.

Reducing the number of students is intended both to improve the quality of education through a smaller student to faculty ratio and to alleviate the overwhelming demand for on-campus housing, Farvardin said.

I agree, though College Park would have been considered a safety school in the past, recently it's gained a pretty great reputation among Marylanders. Our valedictorian a couple years ago ended up at College Park (though she was accepted to Hopkins) and loves it.

I don't put much stock by those national ranking type things (like happycollegemom said, no Georgetown, but Purdue?), but Maryland is solid and rising. Many of my fellow seniors and upper-level students will be attending there.
