I am looking to attend Vassar in the fall of 2020. Other schools I am looking at are Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Grinnell, and Skidmore. I am also an athlete being recruited at all of the listed schools and would like any insight on Vassar
What schools did you choose Vassar over and why? (for current/past students)
I think Vassar is a cut above Skidmore, which is the lowest, I don’t want to say ranked, school on the list. We just came back from Skidmore’s open day and it is a very nice school, but doesn’t compare well to schools like Middlebury and Tufts. I would put Vassar in that latter category though.
Vassar remains an excellent college of top reputation.
My spouse attended it years ago and still maintains friendships with his college friends.
His cousin’s child is a recent grad and had a wonderful time there. He is now in law school (to enhance his credentials and knowledge as a journalist) after a couple of years working as a journalist for a nationally known news organization. I forgot where else he applied, but I recall that one of the other schools on his list was Tufts.
One of my son’s friends from high school is at Vassar now.
Vassar was one of the final five contenders for an early decision application for my son, along with Williams (to which he applied ED and which he now attends), Hamilton, Middlebury, and Wesleyan. Of the other schools you named, he also visited and really liked Skidmore.
Vassar is such a beautiful campus. It also has a great social set up, where students spend their first three years in the same dorm, forming a tight community. Senior year, many move to on-campus, college-owned apartments. The fact that Vassar has very few course requirements means that students are able to study what interests them. And so many famous actors, writers, etc. went to Vassar that you always hear its name in shows and movies! They also visit campus. The theatre scene at Vassar is nice and lively.
I think you picked schools that are similar to one another in feel— excellent small liberal arts colleges with a left-leaning bent. It is clear that you have thought about what would be a good fit for you.
