How private are our essays?

When we send in our applications, how private are these? If we attend the college, do they go into our records? I'm very curious about this. Can they be sent to anyone?

umm well when you sign your confidentiality waiver, i'm pretty sure that means no one ever sees it except for properly authorized people. which at this time, probably means the CIA/Dick Cheney/The good folks at the State and Defense Department. So good luck with that

some schools like U of C says that they will destroy the file once the applicant matriculate.

of course, they made no mention of those who got rejected.....

Obviously, personnel involved in admissions have access to your file. Otherwise, they cannot reveal things in your file to others except your identifying information (name, address, phone) without your consent or receiving a subpoena or court order requiring it to be turned over. The exception is that they can reveal data for reporting facts about students as a whole without revealing the particular persons to whom any particular data applies, e.g., they use info from your file and all files to report ranges of test scores and GPA's.
