There's a thread at the high school forum about this, and pretty much everybody acknowledged rampant cheating in HS, so how is it at college? A lot of college pride themselves on going by the honor system; does that work at all?

While yes, there is cheating at college, no one really knows about it if you aren't doing it. Plus, punishment is much worse than at high school - either on academic probation with a failing grade in the class, or just plain kicked out. The schools take it VERY seriously

What exactly would consolate as cheating in college?

I know of the blatant obvious ways- cheat sheets, copying off people beside you, etc.

But, for example, in my television class in high school (its a 3-year class, all year long, like a major), we take the same tests every year. He considers it cheating if we give other people the answers beforehand to just study with, and the like.

Is this a form of cheating in college as well, or does it really depend on the teacher?

Deviant brought up an interesting point.. it triggered something in my memory.. I have heard a rumor (somewhere long tima ago..) that in frats, they all keep their tests and hand them out to the new members.. is this true?

archdelux, at University of Redlands professors will not let students keep tests or quizzes that will be used again in following semsters, they will just post scores and then lecture on topics that were frequently missed. If a student really wants to see his/her test they can go see the professor during office hours. Furthermore, tests here are pretty much like the tests I had in high school were there were many versions of the same test, each with questions that tested the same concepts, but with different questions. Oh, and most of the frats are terrified of getting their charters revoked and wouldn't risk it with something that could pretty eaisily be discovered by the school.

Professors at my school generally try to deter cheating. Cheating will get you a F in the class at best and expulsion from the school at worst. Calculators have been disallowed on every math test I've taken so far. Backpacks, cell phones, etc. are to be kept in the front of the room. Professors have to be idiots to reuse prelims. The professors here freely post the previous year's prelim (some even post the previous 4-5 year's worth) as study tools.
