How intensely does religion dominate things like academics and activities at Boston College? Will everything I'm taught be somehow related to being Catholic? Also how is the diversity at Boston College? I've heard its pretty white.

Christianity is not as pervasive throughout the college as many think. It's really for everyone. The student body IS heavily white middle class catholics...but I think that religion should only affect the social aspect if at all.

I for one am a junior and definitely applying there early action!

Catholicism is really not that pervasive. You're in Massachusetts, which is, let's just say, not exactly conservative country (come on, we allow gay marriage!)

Collegeboard.com says the school's only 68% white but I will say it seems much higher. It's not something they like, I think they've been trying to change it.

I heard rumors they were switching over to ED some time in the near future but that may have been just a rumor.

I heard its super white too and that they factor in your religion when you apply

their arent that religiouss... lik all the super rich jewish kids in my school's parents donate to BC constantly...

Regarding the people donating constantly to BC, are you sure you don't mean BU? Wouldn't be the first time those 2 were mistaken for one another. Or Brandeis perhaps?

But the answer to the OP's question is that the religion is there if you want it (clubs, services, charities), but if you don't go looking for it, it's like it isn't there at all. Two low-level theology courses are required, but they are historical and/or philosophical--NOBODY is trying to convert anybody there. There are even non-Catholics teaching in the Theology dept, so you could perhaps have an atheist, a Jew, or a Protestant teaching the theology courses.

I worked at Boston College for two years after doing my Masters there. My brother also went there as an undergrad.

Like most Jesuit schools, the influence is there, but it's more for those who seek it out. Catholicism is in no way pushed.

Jesuits are an interesting bunch. They're scholars, so most of them will have Ph.D.s and be teaching, not just hanging out in the campus ministry office (though that's a wonderful place!). Many people don't even realize that certain people on campus are Jesuits...many don't wear clerics and many go by their first names.

I think many students, regardless of their religious background, are happy at BC.

Well I'm sure there are more religious schools (Catholic U, Notre Dame, BYU) out there, i dont think you'd have much of a problem at BC.

And it really is such a great friendly campus. I love it there

sweet, thanks you guys, im excited to visit. Im hoping ill like it a lot. Whats the deal with them switching to Early Decision soon though? How soon will that be? If im a junior now when i apply in the fall do you think it'll still be Early Action?
