How risky can you get with your short essays?

I see people posting funny responses to the “What five words best describe you?” question, but no one says if they actually got in. I’m wondering if anyone has chosen to go the humorous route and gotten in. I assume that particular section won’t be the sole reason someone gets rejected but I don’t want to spend time being creative or quirky or whatever just for it to count against me in the admissions process. Basically where does Stanford fall on a scale of BYU to UChicago?

Looking at your other post, you’re an amazing student. If you can, try to get a feel for your admission counselor, since they’ll be the one ultimately judging your application. Write them an email and throw in a few jokes just to see how they respond.
Ultimately, your application should be a reflection of who you are. If you’re the type of person to make jokes often, then throw them into your application. Schools want to admit who you are as a person, not what your numbers are.

Exercise caution when trying to inject humor into a college application. It can backfire.

The only way to assess whether or not you should include a quirky or humorous essay into your college application is to write the short essay & have it reviewed by one or two adults familiar with the college application process.

Attempts at humor are often misconstrued.
