Just by reading MIT's website, it seems that they (or whoever their writers are) have a good sense of humor. They also mention a few times that you can be humorous, if that's what suits your personality, and they write in a very casual manner (even on the application itself). What I'm wondering is, how risky is it to do a humorous essay? Do a lot of people do that? Will it be cliche or unique? Well-received or looked upon scornfully?

Not that I really have a snowball's chance in hell of being accepted, but I'm applying anyway (also to CalTech! Shh.. don't tell them!). lol That makes me want to be all the more adventurous!!!

I'm applying to MIT and CalTech as well ;)
Anyway, humor is like an international language, so I'd definitely include some of it in all my essays actually. But only SOME. Remember that the essay is supposed to reveal AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE about your personality, qualities, values, aspirations, etc... Too much humor will direct your essay in a different path, a less pleasant one that is. The more well-rounded your essay is, the better. Good luck!

cheer them up! Hell, if I were an admission counselor, I would sure love to be amused! Considering all the mundane essays I get to read everyday!!
They will give you credit at least for trying... but don't be the moron who starts his essay with a joke.. like "knock knock...who's there" ********. Try short anecdotes and funny real life stories.
