How safe are dorms for personal belongings?

So I'm going to be a freshman here at UIUC in the fall and I'm just wondering how safe are the dorms for the stuff that I'm going to bring? I'll be bringing a printer, my laptop, and a 24" monitor for it. I plan on locking down the laptop but my monitor and printer don't have slots for a lock. Should it be pretty safe in there during regular days and if I'm not there for long periods of time like Winter break?

Almost everyone has a laptop on campus and for those that live in the dorms, thats where they keep it so yea it’ll be safe. Some people have printers in their room too and its safe. As long as you know who’s in your room and lock your door when you’re not there you’ll be good

I personally haven’t had any problems; lock your door when you’re not there and keep a general eye on your things and you’ll be fine.

It’s also worth noting that the closets in each room do lock, and your closet is keyed differently than your roommate’s closet (so each of you can only un/lock your own closet). I only locked my closet over breaks (and that was more to keep it away from maintenance staff over people I knew).

If you’re in a dorm with new furniture (the iron/wood stuff) the top drawer of the dresser can be padlocked. I never did this, though.

As CJS mentioned, use your closet, as everyone gets their own and you can lock it whenever you want, but always be sure to lock your door.

Alright that’s nice to know. Thanks everyone for letting me know!

Last year i lived at bromley, and our closets didn’t lock so it depends where you live.

I wanted to mention that the biggest thing is to lock your doors while you’re sleeping. The only incidents of theft last year in my dorm happened while the person was asleep in their own room, left the door unlocked, and woke up to stuff missing.

thanks for the information everyone, i was a little paranoid myself. have any of you invested in safes? if so, can they be bolted down (i’m in FAR-oglesby btw)
