I am just wondering the safety of campus surroundings. I am specifically looking on South side which is Bancroft & Telegraph area.

If you have never visited it before, you will notice a lot of homeless. I wouldn’t say its anymore more worse than an urban downtown setting. But I have had friends children go there, they were female they did get mugged. But then again they did travel at night which sort of ups the risk. They do have these alarms for you to hit, and supposedly security/police are suppose to respond within 90 seconds.

Places to probably avoid, people’s park in daytime or night time. The campus isn’t that bad and has decent amount of traffic at most hours. Just be mindful of your surroundings and don’t make yourself a target (ie visible laptop bag etc).

Berkeley has a free program for students called Bear Walk. You could call Bear Walk and someone will be dispatched to escort you to your location safely (walking or driving).
I’ve been in South Berkeley during the day and I’ve been a little jumpy (though I’m from a small town, so take that with a spoonful of salt). The Elmwood area is very nice though.

Thank you Santookie & Goldenbearz. I don’t want loose the opportunity but after visiting Berkeley from Bancroft we are holding off whether to go or not. It is once in a lifetime opportunity.

sonic my brother in law just graduated from there last summer so did another girl from our church. She was the one that was mugged. She still had no problem, urban areas with homeless just have that issue. If you’re aware of your surroundings and try to avoid those situations, you should not run into any problems. Just be street smart. You can get a dorm sort of close to school and avoid lots of long walking distances.

Then again I have seen some awesome things, like people sitting on some really nasty looking floor on telegraph and praying with homeless. It was actually really awesome. I don’t know if I could do that.

Thank you. What about shuttles service to Unit 1 or 2 or 3. Is there night time shuttle also.
