How selective is howard?

Say, would it be hard for me to get in if I have a couple of F's here and there (bad soph) year) + decent ACT + SAT + Recs+ 2.9/3.0 gpa and good EC's??!

HELP!!! I don't know if I can even get into any colleges at this point...and I don't want to go to CC and transfer after 2 years (even though i wouldnt mind but would prefer not to cause of family issues...)

any other colleges u guys can recommend??!

so far i was thinking:

UMN-TC (in state)
AmericanU
Virginia Common WealthU

Take American University off your list. There is no way you will get in with that kind of GPA.

Um…are you sure??! b/c ive seen ppl with low gpas get in…

but hopefully i’ll have a very rigorous sr courseload…and im trying my best to finish this year strong…

I’m URM…if that helps…

^look in the blue box on the front page of this link (where it says, “Congratulations”)
for the class of 2014, the average GPA was 3.6-4.1

Howard University is not very selective. GPA of 3.0 and average to low average SAT scores should get you in. However, it’s important to remember never to assume that anything is a sure thing.

bumpppppppppp!!

Howard is kind of an anomoly. To it’s credit it is a huge magnet when it comes to multicultural/diversity recruitment for the work place.

What consititutes decent ACT/ SAT scores

If money is not an issue, even if you are admitted, with your gpa I would not expect to receive $$. They do not give much in the basis of need based aid and the merit money is usually used as leverage to attract high stats students.

i’m not too worried about money…should i still apply for fin aid??! even though both of my parents work…i have no idea how much my dad makes (he lives overseas and doesnt contribute a penny) and my mom makes around $60,000 a year but idk if she’ll be able to afford 15,000 a year even though it doesnt seem much to me…will scholarships help maybe??!

I need college suggestions!! preferably around the east coast and urban areas (d.c. is def. my fav city, then nyc after that)…

Maybe post your dilemma on the Parents forum? You can definitely get in somewhere better than a CC with a 3.0 and a decent SAT, but it’ll take some digging to find a school that fits your unique situation (i.e., the F’s on the transcript – and BTW, were they in core academic classes? And do you have an explanation for them or did you just slip up?). Anyway, I highly suggest posting a question such as “School suggestions for student with decent GPA/SAT and failing marks on transcript?” on the Parents forum. They can be very helpful over there. :]

Good luck!

try VCU, cross AU off your list.

I don’t understand why you say that you’re not concerned about money.

Howard costs over $30k per year. How will you pay for that?

well…i kinda have family/health issues which could explain for the grades …i think my counselor can explain…idk if i’d be better off not explaining the situation??!

@bp17033 : wow…thanks…

and omg…my bad i misread the ifo on the website…the tuition is $15,000 not the overall cost…okay i need help then :(

Dude…is American University SERIOUSLY on your list? I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but there is absolutely NO CHANCE of you getting in with a 2.9. I have a 3.3/3.4 with a 1800 SAT and I probably won’t even get into American.

You may have a SLIM chance at Howard, but they usually go with at least a 3.0 GPA. Plus, they won’t be too pleased with those failing grades, HU is getting increasingly competitive by the year. They certainly don’t just accept anyone off of the street. And don’t expect to qualify for any financial aid either. Sorry!

What did you get on your SAT? If it’s at least over 1600 it could be a deciding factor.

you guys are kinda mean but i suppose i do appreciate the honesty LOL

Not everybody is mean. Keep track of names.

PS. I went to Howard many…many years ago.

No, it’s not that were trying to be mean. We’re trying to tell you the truth. There are millions of students competing to get in to college. Admissions officers only pick the best and brightest students. It’s just the reality of the situation.

Sorry, if we sounded abrasive.

arggggggggggh okay i just calculated my chances and i have got a “maybe” so i guess it’s up in the air
and yes my SAT is <1600 and i have a significant leadership position…VP of diversity & and i work 10-20 hrs a week

i will try to get the best recs & write the best essays  plus i live in mn + i have a weird name+muslim last name (Hussein LOL) if that makes me stand out haha

even IF i dont get in the first try can u transfer after the first year

@SHRINKRAP: how was ur experience @ howard??! worth going to??! (my cousin told me she loved it …she even went to princeton after for grad…now works under se. clinton  )

Best time in my life. Went there for undergrad and medical school. VERY easy to never graduate though, so if you go, stay focused!

And in terms of value/worth, it is cheaper than most privates. You would have to compare it with other schools that match your profile, and a community college might be a good value too.

^ I mean i totally wouldnt mind going to a CC or a diff school for 1-2 years then transferring out but i really dont wanna miss out on my freshman experience kinda when everyone is out and tbasically trying to find friends. Plus, I really wanted to go to howard so i could also fun + have an active social life (which i reaaally miss since i moved out here)

but dont worry i’ll work my *** off and get a high gpa and be super involved (just b/c i want to not for apps) so i can get into a good law or grad school
AND d.c. is def. my fav city …we used to live in the dc area (northVA) and still family there so it would be even better

U have no idea how much i miss being around black ppl
