My daughter, who is a sophmore is high school, wants to major in Theatre/Acting. She is a beginning actress/model with several professional credits. Her counselor told her that there is an audition process as opposed to just grades/sats/extras....Her grades will not be stellar, about a 3.7 if the trend continues with some honors classes. Her testing is always pretty good and she does a sport on the national level. Does anyone know how competitive the acting program admissions is and if some credits (she is not, now at least, a "star") will help her get in?

in order to be a theatre major at UCLA you must get accepted into UCLA AND get accepted into the theatre major. so both academics AND acting must be strong- it's very competitive because the program is small and it's really good so tons of people want in.

advice: keep the grades up and keep the acting work up

i know for theatre (and music) that the audition plays a big role in admissions. that is essentially what will determine if you get in or not, because what's the point of admitting someone into the program if they are not to par? the academics need to be strong, but not stellar. the academics basically verify that you could survive as a UCLA student (because not all of your classes would be theatre). my former roommate is a theatre major, and he says you have to re-apply again as a junior? Overall, the program admissions is very selective, but it looks like your daughter is on the right track academically and probably in terms of theatre admissions... i'm not too familiar with this though, so i don't know how she can boost her chances.

A friend of mine from high school is in a musical theater (I think) program, which I heard accepts about 20 people every year. This specific program is competitive, but it might not be what all theater majors do. Is the theater major different from the acting major?
