How selective is the BME program?

I'm currently in the process of applying ED for the BME program at JHU. According to various websites, the acceptance rate for ED at JHU is around 45-50%. But acceptance rates into the BME program must be much lower, considering it's ranked #1 in the country and all. Can anybody offer some info as to how selective the BME program is for students applying ED?

Also, I have a general question about the Common Application which I couldn't find anywhere on the forums. The JHU supplement asks for two essays, and the Common Application asks for two essays as well, correct? So I have to write two essays which will get attached to my common application and will be sent to every school I apply to which accepts the Common App?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I am going to refer you to two Hopkins Forums threads that address your two questions:

As far as BME selection, the most I will write about its selectivity I have done so on this discussion thread:
Hopkins Forums -> Questions Re: Biomedical Engineering (BME)

As far as the essay policy when applying with the Common Application, that is explained here:
[url=http://z14.invisionfree.com/Hopkins_Forums/index.php?showtopic=541]Hopkins Forums -> 2007-2008 Hopkins App. Essays Revealed/url

Wow awesome, that thread answered so many questions. The part about the admissions looking closely at a student's math and physics courses was especially informative.

So you said that the overall acceptance rate into the BME major was around 27% last year. Is it safe to assume that the percentage for ED applicants was higher?

Thanks again

The overall acceptance rate to Hopkins last year was 27%, not their BME major.

Actually, last year their acceptance rate was 22% and in 2007, it was 24%. It was 27% for the class of 2010.
