How set are you on a major?

I was recently talking with some friends about college, and it seems like they already basically figured out what they want to do in college. I on the other hand really have no idea.

So my question is how certaian are you about what you want to major in in college? Also what year of high school are you in?

Aerospace engineering/99.9%/senior

I’m not.

Senior.

Nursing/100%/senior, but i was sure since i was a freshman.

It all depends on the college I’m going to.

Senior.

I’ll major in (pure) math if I turn out to be good enough at it.
I might double major in math and philosophy, but I’m not really sure about that yet.
I’m a senior.

Theater because I want to choose a major with good job prospects.
My backup is literature, and tertiary is theoretical mathematics

When I leave college I’ll have a theoretical degree in physics. 0% Sr

Some form of engineering. 90% sure. Senior.

I want to double major in Accounting and Criminal Justice, as weird as that may sound. Senior/ about 75% sure

I’m a senior and know I want to have some computing and/or math in my major. My top contenders are cog sci and bioinformatics. (Bioinformatics isn’t offered that much in the schools I’m interested in). Most likely my major will end up being math or computer science.

@prestico23 And become one of The Other Guys :D

Pre-frosh, Public Health major, Applied Math minor, 0% sure, Yikes :/

Economics and Spanish, but if a school has PPE then I’ll switch Econ with that.
I’m 100% confident I’ll major in Spanish. My Econ major, I’m probably 65% confident.
I’m a senior.

To everyone putting high percentages, everyone I know and have talked to completely changed their mind about what they wanted to major in/become once they got into college.

I really like my intended major and I am probably 80 percent sure that I would actually major in it if I go to a school that offers it, but if I go to one that doesn’t it is not the end o the world for me…

Incoming freshman, dual major in ESL education and history. 100% sure since I’m pretty much locked into a strict track.

But when I was looking at colleges and you’d have asked me this question junior/first week of senior year, I would’ve told you 100% sure about nursing. But if you have any small doubts in the back of your head or feel the need to justify/negotiate with yourself, it’s not the right choice. I wrestled with the idea for months and months until I finally lost it on the second day of my senior anatomy class. It suddenly hit me when I was reviewing simple body systems that I honestly did not understand it and I remembered that I failed a test on the circulatory system a few months before in bio, so that was the end of that. Fortunately, I didn’t have to change my schools a lot, but I had to think on it deeply. I had always considered myself to be stalwart and stubbornly dedicated to my decisions, but this was one I couldn’t stick to.

so tl;dr: the “85% of people change their major at least once” is totally right. it’s just as important to know what you don’t want to do versus what you do want to do. be flexible. pick a school you love based on its qualities AND its programs (i.e. find a few programs you like). think hard about career prospects and more importantly, if it’s something you can see yourself doing. I couldn’t see myself as a nurse, but I can see myself as a teacher. if you can get hands-on experience in any way, DO IT.

Marketing and biology double major/80%/sophomore

Engineering, computer science to be specific. I’ve known since end of sophomore year and I’m a rising junior.

No clue. I’ve pretty much decided on applying as an undeclared major. I’m a rising junior.

Economics. 70% sure.

100% sure I will be premed. I might change out of Econ if I don’t like it and/or it’s too much work to also get in premed reqs.
