How soon can you transfer?

Hi everyone.

So I haven't started college yet. I applied to some American universities and I did get in a couple but they're not the ones I wanted to go to, so I might just go to a local university for now. If I do this, however, I want to give it a shot again and try to transfer to a good university in America.

What I want to know is, how soon can you transfer to an American university? Can I apply as a transfer student for Spring 2014 (January term), which is to say, while I will be enrolled in my first semester at college? Or do I have to complete a year before transferring? Is there any minimum number of credits required to transfer?

Any help from current and/or former transfer applicants will be appreciated. Thanks.

Not all schools accept sp transfers and fewer accept transfers sp of fr year; you need to check the college websites for information.

Be aware that if you do find a school that accepts fr transfers in the spring, you will be applying during the fall, so other than a possible upward gpa trend sr year, additional awards, etc. and what you do in the summer, your application won’t look much different than it does now.
