Hey guys,

My first semester and I got a 3.13 with 17 credits. I'm at the state flagship school (Michigan State) and am wondering if it's worth trying to transfer now, or to wait until my grades get up.

I think I can get it up to a 3.73 after my summer session. I would then have 42 transferable credits. This is the GPA that would appear when I apply.

It seems like it makes too much sense to transfer for Fall '08 rather than Fall '07. However, after this first year of study, a lot of my credits are non-transferable, about 19-25 of them. This is 19-25 of 77 credits, though.

Should I apply now, when my chances are low, or wait, when my chances are high, but I will have taken a semester worth of useless classes?

My ideal situation, and I don't know if they do this with transfer admissions, is to potentially send in my spring grades, as my GPA after them would be 3.5, and then transfer for next year. But nearly every deadline is March 1st, and my semester doesn't end until May.

depends where you want to go. some colleges look for junior transfers, soph/junior, and some exclusively freshmen transfers. determine where you want to go and look into the admissions process or just post a list of colleges you want to go to and i'm sure many of the members will tell you which schools would be good to apply to now, and next year.

Thanks, good advice. Just found out that a few schools don't accept Spring transfers, so i'm going to try now, can always try again in a few years. Do you think attaching Mid-Term Grades is a good idea in my case, even though these aren't official grades?

i would apply, as you can always apply again...who knows, you might get in =) also, it depends on your major...some majors (engineering, maths, ect) a 3.0 or better from a school like MS is going to be competative...
also, some schools do/don't accept midterm grades...i would send them, and if they dont accept/want them, they'll just throw them away, but it doesnt hurt to try to add something

Well, the schools i'm applying to, a 3.0 from MSU isn't impressive, it's probably at the bottom of the applicant pool.

The point of the midterm grades was because my GPA at the end of the semester will likely be a 3.5, which would be competitive, but at the time of the application, it would be a 3.13, which isn't as competitive.
