How soon is too soon to start prepping for the ACT?

I am eager to start ACT prep. I’m taking one of the spring ACT dates. (Not sure which one). I am about to sit at my desk and take a practice test. When should I start actually studying for the test? This is my first time taking it, and I am a freshman.

It depends on what you score on your first practice test.

C18: Wait until Junior year.
C30: Spring.
C36: Oct 22.

Got a 30 composite on my first practice test. Need to take ACT in spring 17 for application to boarding schools

Take the test in Spring 17, then don’t take again for another year. There’s a 12-time limit on taking the ACT, and you don’t want to use up all of your tests this early in your HS days.

The best thing you can do for yourself, starting TODAY, is read. Read, read, and read some more. This will help you in life and with your ACT exam. Occasionally, try reading Op-Ed pieces in higher level newspapers and magazines like The New York Times or The Washington Post. Make some notes as you read, keep a dictionary nearby, and try to answer basic questions like what is the author’s point? Try to set aside at least 30 minutes a day for this exercise. At some point you may start to enjoy it and start spending more than 30 minutes a day.

Good luck!
