I know in MT auditions, 16 bars is 16 bars…not one more. I have a student auditioning for BFA Acting and she is preparing her 16 bar cut for several schools. She found something she loves that is 20 bars. Since it’s being sung without accompaniment are they strict about the 16 bar cut?
Any real knowledge of this issue would be super appreciated.
In general I would say “less strict”. What school? There may be someone who has experienced. My D had to sing for her Minn Guthrie audition, but they asked for selections from shows she had been in (she has played Sally in Cabaret not long before audition- they asked to hear that)
University of Michigan is strict about this.
Michigan is SUPER strict for MT auditions- but do they ask you to sing for acting auditions?
Schools are often VERY strict about monologue time. I think it was Boston that used a stopwatch for my D (off-putting)
I’m surprised you had issues with monologue timing, @toowonderful - not a single school seemed to care at all for me. It was only an issue during prescreens. Just goes to show how greatly this process can vary.
If it says 16 bars, I would not go over that. It doesn’t make sense to risk the audition for the 4 extra bars. You have no way of knowing ahead of time how strict they will be.after listening to a couple of hundred auditions, auditioned may have lost some of their patience.
