How the prestigiosity ratings became green!

Thanks for trying, Mrs. jym. Your endurance in this game is impressive. Also many thanks for my recent rep from texaspg, mamabear, 3gr8, somemom, poetgrl, and dowzer. I’ll be circling around to your comment boxes as soon as my stars are in alignment again!

I’ll put myself in line behind griffen, jym :)

Thank you so much to all the elves who, overnight, as if by magic, gave me love and green boxes! My three little green boxes give me such joy. I promise to pay it forward.

I shall hold my head up as I carry my three green boxes into the CC lunchroom.

Onward, towards the popular lunch table!

You are so cute eastcoatcrazy. I am saving you a seat at my late night rep table. Please look for your invite at around 11pm in your comments box:).

My best guess, which seems to match actual people’s stats, is that you get to give one extra point for every 100 points in total you possess – it’s only roughly based on the number of boxes, because these vary in value. Having one light green is 500 points and adds +5; having 6 light greens (the max) is 1500 points and +15; having 6 light greens and the final name change (“a reputation beyond repute”) is 2000 points +20.

For determining the baseline, a person gets 2 points for each year since they started posting on CC (8 years max – earlier board members get no carryover) + 1 extra point for every 500 posts you have made.

The overlords have chosen to end my time to be nice. Beacon of light just doesn’t have the same nice ring to it. But, I still promise kindness to those who are kind to me.

It is GLORIOUS Beacon of light, niceday and many of us “crankier” posters much preferred it to the more general “very nice”. The variety of viewpoint is what makes this forum so interesting ;)! You are gaining points very fast. I call you a “player”.

ok griffen- it will let me hit you. Ready??

Lorem-
Is this true even for points over 2000? I am close to 2500, so if I hit that #, will I be able to give everyone another rep point???

OK griffen, I hit you. Now if I can get to 2500, it’ll be interesting to see if I am able to give out an additional rep point.

** wait-- I am confused-- is it an extra rep point for every 100 points or every 500 points??

Jym, I will hit you the next time I have the juice. I’m going to stop signing mine, now. Please pass along your reps to those who are still climbing, or have inspired you or made you laugh or think for the day. I am bright enough, already, for me. ;)

I will do everything possible to be your testing subject for that hit Mrs. jym 626 (Cleaver). Can I carry those packages for you? Thanks from Moveover (haskell)

I seem to be out of energy for whatever 24-hour period I’m in. Also I am on deadline. Will spread green love as soon as I get out from under things at work!

I had every intention, and said so, of stopping when I hit 2000, with plans to continue to spread the wealth. But if my reps climb at a higher rate than other, given the combined formula for reps, I am happy to shower them on everyone. I had not planned to actively reach for the moon, but since I am relatively close to 2500, that seems like a nice target in order to give back to others. Sounds like Robin Hood :)

I hit griffen before I reached 2500. If I reach 2500 I will hit someone then and we can compare the points and pinpoint down the formula that loremIpsum has pretty much decoded!!

Same here. If I were to volunteer, I’d feel obligated to prioritize the review and subsequent questions over other matters that need my attention.

I don’t think that kids randomly seek out people to PM; I think they see one of my posts on another thread outside the Parents Forum (Chance Me, Admissions, etc.), like what they read and decide to solicit help. Sure, they might send messages to several people, but it’s not done randomly.

In general, I’m happy to help – not every kid has the family resources to hire an overpriced college consultant; why should they automatically be disadvantaged in the elite school application process?

Aside from finding the occasional missed typo, the problems that I see tend to be isolated to a couple of individual phrases that might rub adcom readers the wrong way – a statement that sounds too cocky, a generic clich

I was a little confused at this^^ but then remembered the original conversation on this thread. It’s been so long! :)

Jym I looked and the overlords are going to prevent our love exchange until tomorrow morning. I think you’ll meet your goal by then but if not let’s pencil in a date  2500 is amazing! Whoot-whoot! I’m very excited for you!

I ahve to wonder if we all got the same PM fromt he same poster asking for their essay to be read. I think it was yesterday? I dont recall and its no longer in my PM box as that always gets full.

and thanks, Lorem. Will let ya know-- well I’ll let everyone know, if I hit 2500 so we can test out the theory about points.

** oh and I am tapped out for the day again :(

That’s one rep point to give for every 500 posts you have made and one rep point for every 100 green square rep points you have received. As far as I know, the number of rep points you can earn is not capped at +20, but since I am currently holding steady between 2000 and 2100 points, I cannot say for sure. Jym, you will need to give is feedback.

Now that could very well be if the student found us on this thread and went down the list – perhaps we need to compare notes and ignore those who do global hits? In any case, besides the essay PM, I also had another person ask me to give him a “chance him” analysis.

Mine was from a kid from Utah (as per his essay) whose handle starts with ccu…

jym, I don’t know if my measly points were enough to send you over 2500, but was glad to participate in collection of these highly important statistics. Let us know how you fare.

Lorem, other than the occasional typo, I generally look for punctuation improvements and voice - does it sound like the same person throughout. My experience is that people who are trying to impress slip in and out of voice without “hearing” it. Also, I try to point out anything in the essay that made me want to know more.

nebraskagallover - keep in mind that prestigiousity is related only to how many people on CC are avid about a school.
