I'm working on my roommate essay, but I have no idea how to start. Should I write a casual "Hi!", or a formal "Dear X", or what? And how informal can this note be?

Thanks in advance!

Search the forum for "roommate essay." This has been asked many times.

I used an informal tone and included colloquial greetings to show that there's more to me than just a robot. I think the prompt sets up to illicit more of a personal side of the applicant. I also used trivial things but added depth to make it more profound. Good luck.

I just started with "hey"...I think whatever works for you is fine. Don't stress about the actual beginning. The content is what matters. Good luck :)

For the record, I used a: "Howdy Stanford!"

Honestly, there's no use in trying to turn the essays into a science. Just talk to yourself. The way I look at it is:
1. I like myself. I'm pretty confident in the kind of person I am. How can I show Stanford who I really am, so they can appreciate me as well. (aka, Don't just be what you think they want, it does no good.)
2. If I get accepted, I want to be accepted as me, not someone else.

What do you think: can i start my letter as hey man, hey brah, or hey bro?

i used
Hey girl hey!!

Question: Do they actually give the letter to your future roommate? I think that would be really cool.

It would be even more cool if they used it to pair roommates. That would be HILARIOUS.

I think I used Hey fellow Cardinal!

Or maybe you can say, "Hey Pine Tree".

I didn't even use a salutation on mine. It was basically an introspective essay, but I suppose it could be read as a letter.

you shouldn't be asking this on a thread. Figure out a unique way of doing it on your own.

sorry to sound like a butt, but im just saying.

Address your roommate the way you would ACTUALLY address a roommate!!

I've heard that last year, the students who enrolled at Stanford were asked to write another letter to their future roommate which was used to pair people. I guess some people just submitted their old letter..
