Hey everyone I just recieved my package from Fairleigh Dickinson, and this is how it broke down.

22,826 in total grants, and scolarships

total stafford loan is 2,625

total annual expenses equals 35,973 with room and board.

My gap is over 10,000 dollars so I have decided to appeal. Also fdu only gave me 2,000 need grant from them. How does this sound?

To who it may concern

I am writing this letter to appeal the financial aid package that I have received. It is my desire to live on campus, however with the current financial aid package that I have received it will be impossible for me to do so. In choosing a college I not only looked at what they could offer me in terms of academics, but I also looked at the campus life it could offer me. I believe that Fairleigh Dickinsons campus life is absolutely amazing. It is a life I want to be a part of. Currently there is over a $10,000 gap in my financial package. My mother is on a fixed income, and could not possibly afford to fill this gap. My mother earns less than $12,000 a year. Without this gap being closed I do see how I could attend school this fall. Currently there is also no work-study being offered in my package. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. My name is , and my student I.D. is # . I hope we can resolve this matter as soon as possible thank you.

Has anything changed from what you presented in your FAid application & papers? Do you have huge medical bills that aren't reflected anywhere? Most schools award work study, so you might be able to get that. Does your FAid ap show a lot of assets, which is considered part of the ability of student/family to pay. What is your EFC? Is there anyone else in your family who can help you with your college expenses?
Schools are NOT obligated to meet 100% of need, even with loans.

I would suggest you & your mom make an appointment to sit down with the FAid office & talk about your options to allow you to attend their school. Do you have any alternatives in case you can't get the FAid you need? Is there an in-state school where you have low tuition & can live at home? You might want to consider this for a year or two & then apply as a transfer student. This will reduce your expenses & still allow you to get your degree from the school of your choice.

Fairleigh Dickenson is a school that does not meet 100% of your demonstrated need. Their financial aid is given on the basis 64% grant aid and 36% loans.

with in your grant and scholarship package is

Pell grant
Is there SEOG
univerisity grant/scholarship

You have 2625 stafford- max loan

Is therer federal work study as part of your package?

If it is your desire to attend FDU (which does not give the greatest of aid) the only way to close your gap is to find out if you are eligible for :

a Perkins loan- $4000

If your mother is not eligible for a parents loan, you will be able to take out another 4000 as a plus loan

the $2000 balance can be filled with a summer job.

Personally I think that this in addition to the stafford loan is way to much debt as you are talking about $10,000 in loan the first year.

Realistically I think you should look at one of your other options for college.

Since the school has looked at your FA package (as they take the profile and the FAFSA) unless you have had some major changes in your financial situation, they are not going to give you $10,000. They may offer you the 2 options I presented (loans).
