Not sure where to post this so I’ll try here first. D21 has to take a gap year for medical reasons. She does not yet love any of her acceptances enough to defer at one and she wants to apply to more schools, understanding that she will also have to reapply anywhere she was accepted and still likes.
We’re not sure how this works exactly. Right now her high school makes it easy. You just fill out a form and they send everything for you. When you’re no longer a student you have to request a transcript to be mailed (?) but I’m not sure how the rest works. I guess recommendations requested through the common app? They have not had any students take time off then go to college without deferring.
Any other advice on how best to get this done? Should she make a new email account?
Yes, she should have her own email not related to the high school. She should ask the high school counseling office about their procedure for requesting transcripts and recommendations next year, when she is no longer a student. It might be that the procedure is exactly the same as it is now.
She has a non-school email. I just found out that her common app can be rolled over on Aug 1st and the old apps go away so she gets 20 new school slots.
They don’t do anything except mail transcripts.
Which step in the process are you unclear about? Anything high school-related, have her check with the high school on the procedure, including getting new recommendations submitted, as those do not roll over.
I think that to get recommendations, she can connect with the teachers and counselor directly. This might not be the same for her but… My school uses Naviance for rec letters, so I had to request everything to be sent through that portal, and then see that they had been submitted on the Common App. My friend, who is taking a year off this year, put her teachers as recommenders directly through the Common App so that she isn’t bound to a high school in any way. It has been very easy for her.
For those people (perhaps teachers and guidance counselor) who wrote recommendations for her this year, I would be inclined to politely tell them you are going to do this, and ask them if they would be okay giving recommendations again next year. That way they know that this is going to happen.
Agree! And they should be totally fine with it because chances are they’ll use nearly the same letter
@ig364728 and @DadTwoGirls it does seem easy to request recommendations through the common app. Her counselor will definitely help. I’m being told no access to naviance after graduation, so it’s just transcript I’m not sure about. I think that’s it.
For my friend, her transcript was sent by her counselor through Parchment to Naviance. She was able to just select for it to be attached to any application. I’m sure her high school must have a way to do that as people will have requested transcripts to be sent to internships and other programs after graduation.
Thank you! There is a separate transcript person.
