My family had not been planning to apply for financial need, but my counselor said we should apply. The problem is I've already submitted part 1 of the application. I pulled up a pdf version of what I submitted and it doesn't mention financial aid anywhere on it, and I can't find anything mentioning financial aid on part 2 of the application either. How do I mark that I want to apply for financial aid? Thanks for any help.

Information on applying for financial aid is here. The application will be due around February 15 – it is not due now, since MIT will need your parents’ tax information for 2012, and that information won’t be available until early next year.

Thanks. I had been worried that I needed to check off a box on the application telling them I intended to apply for financial aid.

You do not. All admissions at MIT are need-blind. The admissions office does not know or care about a student’s ability to pay at the time that the admissions decision is taken, tho only thing they care about is how well the student matches with MIT.

The financial aid office works exactly the opposite. Their decisions are merit-blind. They do not consider or care how good a student might be, only how much money the student can afford to pay.

Because of this difference in approach, there are two separate applications, one for admission, and one for financial aid, and the two offices operate independently.
