I ended up doing research last summer in economics out in southern California… But it was experimental economics, so in a sense, it involved a laboratory.

If you could find experimental psychology or sociology research, that might have some more flexible options. Or a lot of sociology researchers do more that involves digging into data, so if you can find a professor in that type of work, looking at historical trends and the such… Good luck!

Does anyone know any universities in Northern California(Bay Area) that accept high schoolers to shadow/volunteer? I tried Stanford (i live really near :P) but apparently they only take in undergraduates and older people… =/

Hey Guys!!! Not gonna lie, but I’ve been following this thread since last year… the typical asian in me shining!!

I’m currently a sophomore… and wanna do PolSci. research badly this summer! I live like 20 mins away from Princeton… and I’ve also been trolling Princeton profs. in International Relations/ Inter. Economy.

Does anyone know how I can reach out to them and ask them for a Pol. Sci research oppurtunity. I did read about the OP doing research every year in HS.

Forgive me if there has been a similar post before!

So any advice/ ideas on how to email and ask the profs.???

Any one has any ideas? Can I use the same template in the beginning? Or do I have to make a new email for political science? Anyone with any experience doing research in non-science fields? Thanks!

I’m modifying this template slightly and plan to use it to ask for an internship at a management consulting firm. Not one of the big ones, but a smaller one near my hometown. Hoping I can get it, since it would be really helpful for a business major, which I plan to be.

Has anybody had luck at Columbia? There is a lab I am dying to work in there that is a top lab in the field I am studying in (I am in a research program at my school).

Sardonyx827, how did you structure your email, did you suggest that you are willing to be a lab assistant? now i emailed around 50 and only got 10 replies… with one suggesting me to some other profs and another saying that if i end up in the college he’s at he can talk with me about projects… sigh they say that it’s the state law and regulations enforcing training and safety too much i live in CA… sigh

roxy481,
may I ask, at which schools are you emailing econ professors at? I’m kind of looking in the same field, but I don’t know what I would do in an internship with an econ professor. Also, do you think it’s too late to start now?

I didn’t propose an independent research project idea, so I think that they all assumed that I was looking for an assistant position. Basically in the first paragraph, I introduced myself, gave a general sense about myself, and then I explained why I had an interest in the broad topic of psychology (which is what I want to study). Then I personalized it according to the lab the professor was head of, and tailored a second paragraph to show that I know what their lab focuses on and sort of vaguely described why I would be interested in that. And finally I just had a few sentences summing it all up and thanking them and such! If i had the choice, I would rather go to one of my summer programs I applied to rather than be a research assistant though, because at least at my summer program I would be doing independent research instead of doing medial tasks like data entry and such.

thanks for the suggestions… well i got really depressed after emailing like 57 professors with 18 rejection letters… then yesterday I was really depressed from all the NO’s and stopped emailing… but today I got a positive reply!! This professor in University of Virginia is interested in discussing with me for further opportunities because of my interest in his research! I was so happy when I saw that email, but problems still exist… he wants me to visit his lab to discuss further, and I live in California so it’s impossible for me to fly over there over the weekend or something… my friend says to ask him if i can do an interview or something or phone or Skype formally… but here’s the actual problem… what if I end up getting accepted into some summer programs that I long hoped and applied to? then how should I deal with this professor? I cannot say yes to him at first and then turn him down, it’s not right, that’s like being an a.s.s…how should I respond to the professor now?

I want to major in accounting (business). But, from reading the posts on this thread, most of the internships for college professors deal with science (bio/chem/physics labs).

So, business doesn’t really relate :(

Does anyone have any advice about what I should write in the email to ask college professors for a summer internship? And for those who have done these business internships for colleges, would it be possible if you can email me a sample of the email that you sent?

Is it possible if you could send me a sample of the email you sent ? I am also looking for summer internships that can help me learn about business, which I plan on majoring in.
