Looking for stand-out EC's

So I've seen on some of the accepted applicants to some of the most competitive universities that they've done research and won awards. I am interested in perhaps writing research papers or doing some research at a local university. But how do I go about it and to whom do I submit whatever research I do?

I've heard of some people emailing professors if they'd be willing to let them intern at their lab--but that's probably not the best idea. There are a ton of universities that offer reasearch internships for HSers.

Here would be a good starting point: High School Internships

Thanks jazrie. Any other suggestion?

Most of them are for juniors & above; Any for incoming juniors during the summer?

Tiger_Max22,

I know that Jazrie doesn't agree, but actually, e-mailing or calling professors is not a terrible idea. However, try not to contact those who are flooded- remember, research experience is research experience, whether it's Harvard or Central Florida.

I volunteer for research at my local hospital's neuroscience research arm- that sort of opportunity should be available too. Most of all, bear in mind that you're not going to be accepted to a majority of things you apply to, so try to cast a wide net and you may be surprised what you catch.
