I have to ask for two academic teacher for college recommendations for the colleges I am applying to. I plan to ask my AP Chem teacher I had my junior year. She would praise my work but I was quiet in the class and didn’t participate a lot. I did talk to her quite a bit one one though. I would do all of my work and put a lot of effort into it. I got an A in the class and the passed the exam.
I also plan to ask my AP Physics teacher which I have right now. I am very participative in the class and put full effort in my work. The teacher often praises the answers I have to questions he asks in class. The only problem is I didn’t do so well on one of the tests he gave me. Also would it be fine asking him even though I am appyinng early decision and I have only known for 6 weeks?
My cross country coach will also wrote me a recommendation. I know he will write me a great recommendation as I was a good leader and I am very close to him. I know this rec will be very strong.
Would these pool of reccomendations be fine? How should I go about asking them?
A few comments…
–Ask the teachers if they would write you a positive recommendation for college.
–If you get two academic recommendations they should be from one science/math teacher and one Eng/SS teacher. Having two science teachers recommendations isn’t a great idea as it would show you to be very one-dimensional academically.
-Your X-country coach could be a fine extra recommendation but it does not take the place of an academic recommendation.
Go see them before or after class, or during lunch. Ask if they will please write a college recommendation for you. They will probably ask some questions - what colleges are you applying to, planned major, and when the earliest application is due. Some teachers have a form to fill out or some questions they would like written answers to. Some don’t. I’d send them a follow up email thanking them and reiterating the earliest due date.
They probably know how to provide them to your GC and get them into Naviance, but ask your GC for help if there are questions.
A teacher you have only had for a short time isn’t the best. But it will probably be fine. You might check all the colleges you are applying to regarding what they want in recommendation. A few want a humanities teacher and a science/math teacher, so check the websites.
