redlight: Yes. Actually, if you’re getting 2 teacher recommendations for each school, you’d need 28.
uhh dchow08 u didn’t get it … this is not about deadlines, which are probably Jan 1st(no EA or ED for me) … so what I was asking was, sending recs early don’t have no advantage, colleges will start reading apps when they will, not first-come first-serve basis, right???
What does a teacher need to complete the recommendation part? Or in other words what are you give he/she?
Like can you list me them:
Stamped envelopes etc
Thanks
Wait do u need 2 seperate recs for each school?
Well I think it depends on what the teacher wants. I asked my teachers the last week of junior year, and they wanted a resume which I gave. I did not provide them with anything else, except a tentative list of colleges I’m applying to (and I let them know it wasn’t a final list). I’m assuming I will get more info from my gc when school begins as to the stamped envelopes.
Other than a resume, you should also provide them with a reminder of who you were in the class, like a paper if you were the best writer, etc. I know some teachers conduct interviews. Ask your teachers what they would like as well.

adrivit: Don’t turn things in too early. A few weeks early is probably okay, but I don’t recommend over a month early. That’s what an admissions person at the University of Washington told me.
robertdwsmith: List of due dates and colleges, stamped and addressed envelopes, the form; have a short packet that talks about what activities you do and what you get out of them, any special awards you’ve won, just in case they request that.
And yes. That’s why the Common App has two teacher recommendation forms. Again, it depends on the school. If the school uses the Common App, though, it’s two separate teacher recs and one counselor rec for each school. Then you make 13 more copies and send them all to the 13 other schools you’re applying to. Simple as that. Although I still don’t quite understand how after looking through the Common App and the teacher recommendations thread you still didn’t know you needed 2 teacher apps for each school. It’s pretty obvious once you look carefully at the Common Application and the instructions.
Wait i know that i need 2 recs for each college but what i am asking is that
DO U NEED 2 DIFFERENT TEACHERS FOR EACH COLLEGE?
NO. the same TWO teachers can write the recs for all colleges. Infact, they make just only ONE rec and send them to all colleges.
“Then you make 13 more copies and send them all to the 13 other schools you’re applying to.”
C’mon, I already answered your question, robertdwsmith.
when giving samples of past assignments to teachers, how many do you usually attach? would four be too much?
as many as u feel wud be appropriate. 4 or 14 dusn’t matter. make sure all ur accomplishments are covered. use ur own discretion.
If you are applying early, would you just get your teachers to copy & send to all 10 or whatever # of RD colleges you are applying to in November as well?
After my teacher writes me recommendation, should I photocopy them after they signed it? Or should I photocopy them and then have them sign each one?
I just don’t know if a photocopied signature is valid lol…
i have 2 more questions:
im giving my teachers all 9 x 12 envelopes to mail their recommedendations to colleges as a precaution. does anyone know how much postage each envelope would need?
i would also like to send self-addressed return postcards. how would i write out my request on the back?
thanks for your help!
1.) The regular envelopes should be fine, not necessary to have 9x12, because it’s only about 2 sheets of paper. I recommend that you go to the post office, have them weigh it, and then pay. That way there’s no risk.
@mc1600 #1: Make sure you read the admissions instructions! i,e, Stanford says you MUST use 9x12 envelopes and you must use their PRINTED address labels…
Stanford uses a lot of ‘MUSTs’ as if Application were some sort of Court Trial … you can’t send supplemental materials, can’t do this, can’t do that … hmmph!
Sorry, Nevermind.
@dimpleyy: Your teachers write one rec. Xerox. Sign on ALL the photocopies. The photocopy of a signature has NO value.
this question might have already been answered, but i don’t really feel like scanning through all the pages to find the answer.
we’re not obligated to have the recommendation letters from only teachers right? what i’m doing is asking my science olympiad coach (he says i’m the greatest president he has ever seen in his 17 years of coaching) and my science research seminar instructor. and if i need 3, i would ask the director of volunteer services at my local hospital for the 3rd. that way i have one letter talking about leadership, 1 about academics, and one about giving back to the community.
does this seem like the right idea?
