Bring them a bottle of old wine
Hey guys iām in a dilemma here.
Iām planning to major in computer science/information. I can only get a math recommendation letter from my 9th grade math teacher so should I send in that one or should I send in one from my 11th grade social studies teacher? I always hear people saying one math/science and one english/social studies Do colleges want to see a recommendation letter from a subject of intended major or just a good letter?
Also should i still send in my English letter of recommendation even though my teacher didnāt look at my resume?
Any thoughts are welcome >.<
How do you guys get teachers to like you? Iām a good student and I participate in class, but I am such an awkward turtle with adults that I donāt know wellā¦I canāt have casual conversationsā¦let alone be friends with teachers!! I honestly have no idea how my friends do it.
I completely do not understand the letter of rec process
This is simple. All I do is go up to a teacher Iāve had in the past, most likely a class that will help with my major, and ask them if they would like to write a letter of recommendation for me. These teachers are ones that I have a good relationship with, of course. You also might want to ask your counselor. I hand them my resume and transcript and give them at least two weeks. If youāre using the Common App, in the recommendation section, it asks for the email of the recommender, and the recommender will attach it to your Common App. This letter will attach to all your schools on the Common App.

1. Is one week enough time to get a letter of recommendation? I would guess it is less than ideal, but this is really not my fault. I applied to a university and was supposed to be notified if I was eligible for scholarships weeks ago, but they entered my transcript GPA wrong (it is 3.84, they put 2.84) and I just called them to fix it today. So I got the email, and the letters of rec are due December 10. Is it really rude to ask a teacher to do a letter of recommendation in that amount of time?

2. I donāt know how the letters of recommendation are supposed to be sent! I have submitted my entire application, and essays, online. The merit scholarship application is online, and all it asks for are the email addresses and names for the letters of recommendation Iāll be getting. Does this mean my teachers will be sent an email leading to an online form where they can send it in?

3. Do I really need to provide any extra information to my teachers who are writing the recommendations? I thought the letters were supposed to highlight my academic achievements, which they know about without any resumes or biographies. One of the teachers I plan on asking has taught me for all of last year and this current year, and the other has only been my teacher this year but Iām doing very well in her class and I think she knows me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! These recommendations could mean thousands of dollars in scholarship money for me.
I have read many posts in this thread and I have some questions which hopefully someone will clarify.
I know most students may be applying to at least 3-5 colleges. How many rec letters one should try to get? 3 -5???
Is it okay for rec letter writer to write a letter, sign it and then make copies? or it will be better to write a letter, make copies and then sign each letter so it will have original signature?
Can non-teacher who knows you very well write a rec letter? Is it okay to include Principal or Superintendent along with your teachers or it has to be from school teachers only?
When recommender writes a letter, do they address: To whomsoever it may concern or address it to the specific school?
If recommender can write and sign a letter, give it to GC and then GC can make copies as required, this will be sweet, that way you donāt have to bother recommender, they write you a letter once and that it.
In this case, it will be photo copies of rec letter. I believe this is okay.
Can someone verify and correct and add more info to the above?
Itās okay if you have 2 rec letter and the one from your counselor
Iād go for making copies and then signing themā¦
Itās reccomended to get your rec from teachers, but you can submit other rec from pricipal or superintendent too
Itās to whomever it may concernā¦
Beginner Q: How many letter of recommendations do you need from your teachers? 1 or 2?
I donāt know if I should ask in this thread, since Iām not asking about a rec for college (already there! Whoo!) but here I go.
A program at my school allows me to work abroad in the summers. Usually, I do work/research relevant to my major, but Iāve just started a minor in Econ and would like to see if I can find a related position. And I do really mean just started. Iāve taken one econ class, and got a B+ in it. Since Iāve only taken one class, obviously I can only ask this one prof for a rec.
I met with the professor twice outside of class and would definitely meet with him again to discuss the letter and give him my resum
Hey,
So I am about to send in two letters of recommendation to a college, and the problem is that in one of my letters, the person who has written it has used my āalternativeā family name, and I am using my other family name in the applicationā¦my first name is correct and all, but will this be a problem? She has talked about things I talk about in my essay, so itās obvious she is talking about me but still, got me a bit worried.
For me, I just asked my teacher for the recommendation. My school has these autobiography things where you can write some things about yourself like what you want to major in, what clubs youāre in, and other things the person writing the recommendation can write about. If your school doesnāt have that you can always write up one yourself- just like a short āThese Are Things You Should Know About Meā. Itās also best to pick a teacher to write a recommendation who knows you pretty well. I know friends who asked teachers who only knew them for a couple weeks and their letters werenāt nearly as in depth as mine since I chose a teacher who has known me for four years.
As far as sending the letters, just give them to your guidance counsler and he or she will know the schoolās rules for sending letters.
Good luck!
What kind of teachers should I be asking for recommendations? Would fine arts be acceptable or should I go for a teacher that instructs a more core class such as math or bio?
Who does somebody ask for a letter of recommendation if they have received their GED and has not been to school for many years?
how many recomendations do you need?

Check each college website. They will usually have a checklist somewhere that will have this information.
@ OneWayto Uni: very few colleges require recommendation letters. Check first on their websites to see if they are needed. If one is needed, you must understand the purpose of these LoRs. They want outside affirmation of your ability in a learning environment. A job supervisor or trainer, someone who oversaw your work in another setting, etc., these are viable.
Again, they want people to say you played nice with the other boys and girls and liked learning:)
If I have received a recommendation letter at this late date from a friend whom I think might help my chances for acceptance, how do I send it? I have been given the letter to send off to the colleges myself. I assume I should include some sort of letter with my identification number, my address, birthdate? Any help much appreciated.
Check at school websites. At this late date, some may only want a fax. Otherwise, mail a Xerox copy to the admissions office.
Yes, include your identifying info.
What about this friendās rec letter do you think is different than what youāve already submitted? Is he/she your instructor or mentor or supervisor?
If itās just a random friend attesting to your ācharacterā or willingness to āwork hardā then itās worthless to add to your file.
