I am interested in participating in the Intel Science Fair. I know I first have to first apply to my regional science fair. But I am completely lost and don’t know where to start. How do I get the basic background information needed to come up with a topic? Is it against the rules to use the facilities of a nearby university for my project? NOTE: I am especially interested in computer science/cybersecurity.
There is lots of information here: https://student.societyforscience.org/intel-isef
I actually had questions regarding the actual process of gaining background info and coming up with a topic for the ISEF.

Have you read through the entire website? There is a huge amount of information about the methodology and process.
I’ve looked at the Pathways to Science Research. I just want to know how people gain background info on the subject at hand. Do they read a book or two? Do they take a class? Do they do research with a scientist(as mentioned in the link)?
My daughter participated over 5 years ago – she worked alone at home, and did a lot of reading and online research. I couldn’t say what percentage of the internationally competitive projects involve working with a professional. (Although if a parent is a professional, that would be even harder to determine.) Maybe some high school students who have participated recently can give a better estimate of how everyone is putting together their projects.
