I usually found it very easy to get friendly with english teachers but what I have found different in an AP class is that all we do is write write and write.

my teacher is alway occupied grading 150 new essays every week, gives feedback, and makes us copy notes.

He knows my name and knows that I'm an active participant in group discussions, but I seriously doubt that he will remember what kind of a write I am having gone through the other 149 papers.

How can I embed a positive image of me in him?

(*I'm only a junior and I just anxious that he'll be writing me a recommendation when he doesn't know a single thing about me)

I forgot to mention that my teacher is very posh... (you call them WASP's rights?) and doesn't seem to care about the students that much and this is the major concern. I think he'll ruthlessly reject me if I ask him for some time to review my essays.

Don't write well; don't write flawlessly; write magnificently. If he spends most of his time reading essays, write one he can't forget.

Bring your essay up to him after class or before, tell him you want to improve and if he could give you a few pointers on how to do so.

btw- being a good writer (and it seems this is a good way to get his attention) doesn't require a lot of extra work, it just requires inspiration -- seriously. I suck at spelling, and my hand writng is atrocious, but I was really good at writing in high school.

Talk to him at least once before or after every class; it will make you stand out from the other 149 students who walk into his class. Ask him how he's doing, what his plans are for the weekend, etc. The only catch is that you really have to mean it, if you're just trying to buddy up to him for good grades and a good reccomendation, he'll sniff you out, and everyone else will think you are a suck up.

my AP english teacher is the same way.. i'm so afraid to ask him to help me with my essay. he's been a teacher at two colleges--berkeley and UC san diego-- so he's highly qualified... it would be really nice if he wasn't so neglectful! haha

And if he's not willing to take the time to get to know you, or if you don't think he'll give you a good rec, find another teacher you could potentially ask. And for essay help, even ask your soph teacher or something like that.

My teacher was also distant almost unapproachable and had taught at universities, just give it a shot, the worst that can happpen is he says no, or tells you to get lost.

Seriously, teachers appreciate students who are striving to improve. Take advantage of the qualificatons he's got.
