So I have 2 colleges I'm considering right now: Campbell University and UNC Chapel Hill.

Obviously, UNC seems like the better choice. However, I won a full scholarship for Campbell, and the date to respond to that is before I hear about the honors program/any scholarships from UNC.

Basically, medical school is my goal, but simply getting into one is what I want to do--I don't care as much about prestige. Is getting in even possible if I don't go to a "better" school like UNC? I want to minimize debt as much as possible, and I really don't want a big school anyway. Campbell is smaller, which is definitely my learning style, and from what I gather has an atmosphere more suiting my personality. Would it be worth it to attend UNC anyway for the name?

Also, Campbell does have one of the top pharmacy schools in the country. Would some of that translate over into their other sciences/pre-med or are the two programs completely separate when considering the academic strengths of the two schools?

Thanks guys :) I've been having trouble wrapping my head around all this.

You might consider talking to some folks at a medical school in your area or one you might consider. I know that some med schools might be particular about this, but some would not.

I have found it is best to get input from someone where you might want to go.

You can usually request an extension so that you can give a decision at a later time. Schools are not supposed to demand a decision before May 1st.

Premed and prepharm are very similar…required bio, chem, ochem, physics, and calculus classes. I think prepharm may require more chem classes. If Campbell is strong in prepharm prep, then it’s going to be strong in premed. Premed curriculum doesn’t require something odd or different…so it would be fine.

You will want to minimize as much cost for undergrad since med school is very expensive.

Did you get a full scholarship to Campbell…tuition, room, board, and books? Congrats.

UNC is one of the most respected public universities in America. Campbell is a little-known, rural, church-affiliated school. US News ranks it 37th among southern regional universities; stateuniversity.com ranks it 28th in NC and 825th overall. 30% of Campbell students leave after the first year, compared to less than 5% of UNC students. According to the Campbell web site, only 3 recent biology graduates are in med school (all in NC).

Are these your only choices? Could your family afford the UNC costs (about $16K/yr) if you don’t get aid? If not, could you commute to CH (or to another campus) for a year or two?

I agree, you should seek an extension from Campbell. Maybe another possibility is to risk losing any deposit money, in case UNC comes through later with an acceptable offer.

If medical school is your ultimate goal, I am not sure about the relevance of the pharmacy school rankings. But if you are interested in that, according to the US News & World Report rankings UNC Chapel Hill is ranked #2 and Campbell is #56.

As a previous poster mentioned, Campbell is a very small, religious school. Is this what you are looking for? Campbell does not easily post their freshman profile, so I was not able to make a comparison between UNC and Campbell for undergraduate stats.

If a school is known to have a strong pharm school then it’s known in the medical community. It will also be strong in the math and sciences, which is what matters for med school and success on the MCAT.

I think you need to post your concern in the pre-med forum. There are med students, residency students, parents of med students, and pre-med students posting there.

They can give you the info that you’ll need.
