How to choose which major you want the most?

Hey guys!

This is my first post and I am not from the states(Swedish), so instead of specific input of schools I'd really appreciate some general recomendations in my situation!

To start with: since I was a little child I have loved everything around aviation and airplanes. After failing pilot medical and air traffic controller amplitudes I decided to apply to a business school. But changed my mind in the last minute and got into mechanical engineering. My thought was to be able to work in the airplane manufacturing industry (boeing, airbus etc) but since day one I feel more and more certain of that this is absolutely not what I want to do for a living. All the courses are kind of boring as well (even though I get good grades at the exams)

I started to analyze what I really want to do, since I feel that time is running out (currently 23 years old) and then I found three alternatives that really speaks to me!

Network planner. Basically working for an airline or an airport and plan the route network (where the airlines should start and/or develop traffic, which airplane to use etc)

Real estate developer. Invest in land and build properties and then sell

General construction. Working as a consultant on different project as bridges, tall buildings, dams, airports etc

I think the reason why I came up with these options is pretty much because these are my major interests. Aviation since I was a child, also I have always been fascinated about big cities and infra structures. Besides that I am pretty interested in venture capital, investment analysis (therefore real estate development). I just haven't seen these options until now.

My thought is to either get into economics/finance for alternative one and two, or civil engineering for alternative 3 (and 2 I suppose, or might a finance background be better for that?)

Well, I know that you shouldn't know your future path in detail but at the moment I got major concerns choosing between these two (and which career I really do want the most)

Regards!

Most schools let you choose a major after you are accepted. It’s fine to take classes in other departments as well, especially at the state schools. The exception is engineering.

I would certainly take some classes after being accepted before choosing the major.

You don’t just need to choose ONE major. You can double-major, have one major and two minors, have one major and 3 minors, double major with a minor, etc. I plan on double-majoring and also pursing a teacher certification in one of my majors. If you know you want to double-major, have minors, etc., from the start, you can work it out with your counselor in college to assure that you’ll graduate on time.

If you don’t want to do anything like that, it’s okay to not be sure of what you want to do now. You can apply to college “Undecided”. If you do that, you can take classes in all of those areas and see which one appeals to you the most.

Good luck!
