How would a student compile a Writing Portfolio of
articles written for school paper, poems and
other pieces? What is appropriate and how many should
be sent/included? Should this be in a digital pdf. format
transmitted on a CD or Flash Drive, or in printed format
or perhaps both? Anyone who has done this might suggest examples.
Thank you for the input.

I should be in printing format I believe. The list of accomplishments should be listed in the front and then they should be numbered after it. As for how it should be sent, it depends on the school. They would usually ask you to send it via mail. But you might have to ask them as far as that goes.

Would this be for a journalism major? My kids never sent a writing portfolio. Essay’s yes but not writing portfolio’s.

If a college requires a portfolio of some sort (art, writing, etc.) for a specific scholarship or application to a specific program, generally the college website will specify how that can be assembed and sent. If this is just “thinking ahead” be sure to read the college application websites as some colleges specifically address any additional materials - and if they even accept additional materials with the application.

I think to some extent it depends on how much you want to impose on the readers. A serious high school writer who has been through some creative writing programs or done journalism with any seriousness will have hundreds of pages worth of material. You can’t ask people to read that.

If you can’t tell what your best 2-3 things are, and aren’t willing to stake your claim to people’s attention on them, you have no business submitting a writing portfolio.

Now, obviously, if you are applying for something like USC’s screenwriting program, there are specific rules, and you comply with them.
