How to Defer a college for gap year in U.S

<p>Hi, </p>

<p>I got into a wonderful four year liberal arts college under Early Decision. Before I start my new "chapter" i'd like to do a year of volunteer / service work. How do i go about requesting such a deferal? I am required to submit a deposit to hold my spot in the college for next year by January 15th. Do i submit a note along with the check? What do i do?? I feel so lost. </p>

<p>First, search the college's website and look for any information available online re gap year. If none exists, then contact the admisson office to see if the college allows a gap year. If they do, ask what they need from you to hold your spot</p>
