How can I find out without "officially" filling out the application? I want to find out before May 1st, when I have to send in my deposit to my school.

Perhaps someone can come along with a better answer, but did you ask your parents? If you do web search there are a few things that would automatically preclude them from being approved, but I’m guessing your parents would know what their credit report/score is and have a idea of they would be approved or not. Have they agreed to take out a PLUS loan for you and are they willing to take out 4 of them (one for each year) if need be? That can be a very large amount of money and debt load… I’d suggest talking to your parents first if you haven’t already.

Some colleges will not run the credit check on the Parents Plus loan until aprx. 90 days before school starts. For most people that is not when you submit your Parents Plus application but instead closer to the end of May.

But how about if my parents find out that they cannot qualify for the PLUS loan AFTER I send in my deposit and have my heart set on attending a certain school?

It is a risk. Have you looked at the reasons why parents are turned down for Plus loans? Do your parents meet any of those disqualifications? Have they told you they do not think they will be approved? Do you have another college alternative such as a community college if they are turned down?
