"How to Game the College Rankings" article about Northeastern

There is a fascinating article in Boston Magazine ( 8/26/2014) about Northeastern by MAX KUTNER, that I think anybody considering Northeastern should read.

It describes how NU quickly rose from obscurity to a USNEWS top-50 rank by carefully manipulating test scores and other statistics tracked by USNEWS. It also notes how NU upper management reaps massive salaries (the NU pres. is the 2nd highest paid univ. pres in the U.S.). It unfortunately fails to call out how NU pumps up revenue with programs like NU.IN that tend to extend the number of semesters of tuition payments (USNEWS reports a 0% 4-year graduation rate).

My student is going to turn down his NU.IN acceptance and we’re moving on. But I think NU needs to be called out for its deceitful practices.

This article was from eons ago.

“This article was from eons ago.”

And your point is… I don’t see anything in it from 4 years ago that isn’t still relevant today.

Yes. That article is several years old and has been linked here on CC many, many times.

Northeastern has always been structured on a 5 year degree plan. It is possible to complete most programs in 4 years with fewer coop periods. The 4 year graduation rate is low but not zero. USNews got that wrong.

As I said in your other thread it is unfortunate that your son was not selected for Fall admission in Boston but you seem to be taking that hard. It is time for you to move on.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

The point is that it has been discussed several times on this site. e.g.

So I see no reason to rehash. The OP and son are “moving on” so I’m closing.
