How to get a good rec...?

Well im worried about my recs next year. the sport i play, volleyball, has coaches from a different school. I havent had any teachers for more than one year, and im not very active in school clubs. Im not really very close with any teachers or anything and im getting worried about getting a good rec. what can i do to get to know my teacher better and how do i pick the right teacher? I have one in mind, but his class is a lecturing type class and doesnt allow for much participation. should i just talk to him after school and become friendly? any other ideas?

same with my counselor...ive barely ever seen her. should i just make appointments to ask her about colleges and be nice and friendly with her?

Ask your teachers questions- stay after class, e-mail them, whatever.

I also have a question pertaining to teacher recs... I've been thinking about getting all of my teachers Christmas/holiday presents, seeing as how it's junior year and such. I'm not thinking big, just like a nice card and maybe a $5-$10 gift certificate to a book store. So are teacher gifts a good thing or not?
