How to get a research position?

I am majoring in electrical engineering and am a rising sophomore so I don’t really have a lot of experience nor have I taken any of the core EE classes yet (I will be taking some starting this fall though). I understand that you have to look up professors and learn about what they are doing their research on. However, the trouble I am having is how do you even know that you would even qualify in being a part of their research? Almost all (if not all) of the ones I have seen only have grad students working on them. How should one scope out a research opportunity that accepts undergrads with not much experience?

Approach the professors, tell them what you are interested in. At first it will likely be an unpaid internship.

Yep, the first step is talking with the professors and it’s likely unpaid. Here’s a link to some of the research clubs on campus.

Center for Undergraduate Research Board of Students (CURBS) is your best bet (after talking with some of your professors!), for info. They host research fairs, student/faculty research mixers, etc.

Good Luck!
