How to get instate tuition

I will be attending AEM in CALS next year so if i were to be a new york resident, I would get instate tuition. Though I was born in NY, I have since moved. However, if my parents were to buy me a house/apartment to live in and rent out in Ithaca, would this qualify me for in state after a year?

I understand I also need income taxes paid to NY. Though my dad works out of NY, I could possibly get a summer job and pay my taxes to the state of NY (though they wouldn't amount to much).

Anybody know if this would work? Anybody try this before?

i’m pretty sure you need to prove that you’ve lived in NY for a while.

According to a quick search, residency is only based on your parent’s residence unless you’re financially independent: [Cornell University - Search Cornell](<a href=“Cornell University | Search Pages”>Cornell University | Search Pages)

Just buying a house or apartment to live in wouldn’t make you independent.

Think of all the students whose parents rent them an apartment for school in Ithaca. They certainly aren’t considered in-state.

I think you’re out of luck.

If you are a dependent of your parents (most college students are), your parents would need to live in NY and to prove their residency. Each state is different for proof of residency, but where you live as a college student does not establish your residency.

i see what you guys are saying but what I’m asking is if my dad buys a house under his name in Ithaca, what’s to say he’s not living in it? What other documents would we have to provide for residency?

His tax return to prove he resides in NY.

In order to prove NYS residency as a dependent student, your parents must establish their primary domicile in NYS. In addition, your parents need to provide the following documentation:

-Copy of NYS voter registration card
-NYS driver’s license
-Bank statement, bank must be located in NYS
-Confirmation of residential situation (lease or mortgage and any property taxes paid)
-Current year’s tax return
-Car registration and insurance

Additional and substantial documentation is required if you’re under 21 and trying to prove that you’re an emancipated student.

Everything you need to know about establishing NYS residency for tuition purpose can be found here: [Cornell University Application Guidelines](http://bursar.cornell.edu/Application_Guidelines.cfm)

I have a friend who was able to get NYS resident tuition and declare financial independence. It took her about 2 years.
