How To Get Into Harvard (by a Harvard student)

That's a pretty compelling reason.

According to US News, the five top "great schools at great prices" - taking into account both academic quality and financial aid - are, in order:

Caltech

Harvard

Princeton

Yale, and

MIT

Look, I'd just like to say to all the high school freshman posting about getting into Harvard: Chill out guys. It's great that you have high goals for yourself, but you're only 14/15 (generally) and a lot happens to you in between that age and when you're 17/18 (again, generally) and applying to college. I myself am an 18 y/o senior, and I'm applying to Harvard RD. I thought I wanted to go there when I was a frosh, but then I went through a period where I was extremely turned off by it, and now I'm giving it a chance again. A lot of things can change for you, so don't get too fixated now. Focus on keeping your grades up, doing things that you care about and enjoy inside and outside of school, and making freinds, having fun, etc. High school's really where you change from child into an adult (well, somewhat), so don't forsake it on worrying about getting into Harvard as a freshman. Some of what I say might seem contradictory to you, but I'm sure the older people here can back me up. You will probably get into a college that is a good fit for you, and there is a good chance it won't be an Ivy. So, keep your goals and push yourself, just try to keep some perspective about where you are in your life.

I agree with xtuhcee and matrixrebloated- HS freshmen really shouldn't spend time on these boards. Nothing against you, it's just- college admissions doesn't have to take over your life until next year at the EARLIEST. Don't let it!

Seriously- a lot does change over the course of high school. There's no point in thinking about it now- it just makes you get more nervous. Do yourself a favor and leave these boards for at least another year.

Hi,
Can someone get into Harvard with these type of grades? My friend wants to go to Harvard, and other top schools but she had a difficult first quarter in her weakest subjects(math and science) which is bringing down her overall semester grades. We go to a top boarding school, by the way, and she is African-American. She says she KNOWS she can bring her grades up to all A's spring semester, but she wanted to know if her fall semester grades will bring her down. Please...does she stand a chance, considering the school rigor/reputation, URM, predicted improvement, good essay, SAT's, etc. She's a sophomore, by the way. These are what she says she predicts to get-she has not yet taken the midterm exams. Can she still have a chance for Harvard?

English A-
History A-
Latin A
Math B- or B(depending on exam)
Chemistry B- or C+
Computer Science A

you seem to know a lot about your 'friend'. again, read above. focus on school, not on college. enjoy yourself.

also, this is the 3rd place that you have posted it. Have patience, your answer will come. There are always people on this site who are willing to help, but it lessens their will to do so when you spam the boards with it.

I apoligize. I'm really trying to give my friend reassurance that she still has a great chance at Harvard, by getting different responses because she's really beating herself up about this. I don't mean to seem impatient or like sime CC board sketchy scamming person.

Jaymz07-she told me her grades, which is how I know....

"Depth, not breadth"
ABSOLUTELY right !!
thx lowellbelle !

i strongly second Xtuhcee's advice to freshman
i am almost having the same exact experience as Xtuhcee is
as a freshman/soph. i didn't want to go to any school other than Harvard but last year i realized that Harvard only gets that extra nod because it is a name
people need to learn to look outside of us news' top 5 and rather look for a school that would fit their needs because if your just going for Harvard and nothing else, there is a very good chance that you are going to come back empty-handed.
just do the things that you are passionate about and take them as far as you can

hello lowellbelle, im a 3rd year dental student at the manipal colege of dental sciences india...i have a question for you:
how do you define intelligence? i have friends who never ever get good grades but when it comes to answering certain questions (application based questions) they come out on top..........this is why i argue that everybody has their own zone of intelligence as i would like to call it and so you cant really compare two different individuals......do you know anyone who got into harvard or other ivy league schools with average scores?? i need your point of view on this matter... thanks.

hey, i have a really hard situation.... i live in another country, in latin america, i got into the top university, i have very good grades in highschool and currently i'm having good grades at college too. But due to some situations i have to move out of my country. i'm looking for academic excellence. according to you guys what are my chances to get into an ivy league like harvard? i mean, can i apply from here? or do i have to live in the us? do you guys study w/ inmigrants? plz give some hope !

Gns, I know many, many people at Harvard that grew up in other countries- from China, Israel, Argentina, etc. I even knew students that had never been to America before in their lives.

thanks for your answer :D it really makes me feel better... is asked that because i've never talk to any harvard student ... i really want to go to the architecture school...it's my dream..it's not my only choice, but it's my first and if possible , second too

Harvard doesn't have an undergraduate architecture program Gns. You should look at programs at other schools as well.

i'm confused then.. very confused

The architecture program at Harvard is graduate only:
http://www.gsd.harvard.edu/academic/arch/degrees.html

check out fastweb.com to see the sat scores that some of these ivies will admit, and the percentages. you will be suprised where you can get into. some ivies don't post their stats... too embarrased i guess to reveal the fact that... you don't even have to make all 700s to get in. where as in MIT/ caltech you kind of have to.

That's very true. So what if you don't have all 700s...? (Oh...and that's def. not true with MIT and Caltech. I know people who don't have all 700s.)

^ Which is precisely why almost all the chance threads are bogus.

Chance thread: I got 2330, will I get in?

Reply: your SAT score's too low. RETAKE!

Me: :O

thanks WindCloudUltra i wasn't aware of that. is it true that harvard campus is "dominated" by graduated?
