I am in aspiring student who wants to go to med-school. Can anyone tell me the basic requirements and the best steps to take while in college.

Start here:

There is no one, sure-fired, guaranteed route to medical school. What works for one person, won’t for another. I have 2 kiddos (one finishing up MS3; one already accepted to med school for the fall 2014)–their paths could not have more different, but both will be doctors.

General academic requirements:

–2 semesters intro biology with labs
–2 semester general chem with labs
–2 semesters organic chem with labs
–1 semester biochem
–2 semesters general physics with labs
–2 semesters of english or other “writing intensive” courses
–2 semesters of ‘college level’ mathematics, one of which should be statistics
–1 semester of psychology
–1 semester of sociology

Individual medical schools may have additional specific requirements.

Overall advice:

–choose a major you genuinely like and not one that “will look good to medical schools”
–do well in all your classes
–volunteer in variety of activities (both clinical and non-clinical)
–cultivate relationships with your professors
–find leadership opportunities
–engage in research you find important and meaningful
–work on developing good communications skills-- written, oral and interpersonal
–touch base with your school’s pre-health professions advising office every now and then to keep current with the latest changes in medical school requirements and the application process
